I stared at the small statue with her blondehair and green eyes as she looked toward heaven. River said itreminded her of the little girl she’d started seeing a few weeksago. She believed the ghostly child was a sign of good, and thoughI trusted her instincts, I didn’t like the fact that it onlyappeared to her, and I didn’t entirely trust it.

She lay down on the front seat and restedher head on her hands. “I’ll get you a pillow and blanket,” I toldher.

“No, I’ll be fine.”

Sitting up again, she turned toward me andclasped my face tenderly in her hands. Her pure violet eyes blazedwith love when she leaned forward to kiss me. One of her handsstroked over my face before sliding down my chest and lower.

“Hurry,” she murmured as she rubbed my stillswollen dick through my pants. Her eyes darkened with desire, and asultry smile curled her full lips.

“I’ll be back soon,” I promised.

It was more than my physical conditionmaking it difficult for me to walk away from her and over to whereBale and Corson had gathered the other demons; it was also myintense reluctance to part from her when I knew she needed me. Thedemons bowed their heads to me when I neared, and Bale, Corson,Shax, Verin, and Morax moved to flank my sides as I stood facingthe group.

I stood between Shax and Verin in the centerof the small group I considered to be my most trusted allies andstrongest fighters. Each one of them had their strengths andweaknesses, their own opinions of action or caution.

Shax was ever the voice of reason, andwhereas the women liked Corson because he was more easygoing aroundthem, they loved Shax for his looks. The humans trusted him becausehe was the most human looking of the demons with his blond hair andyellow eyes, but he kept his true self hidden from the humans.

Many of the human men watched Verin’s everymove. She was beautiful with her yellow hair and eyes to match.Even now, the men watched her as she stood beside her Chosen,Morax.

The humans may lust for her, but none ofthem would dare to approach her because of Morax.

Morax frightened the humans the most. Hisgreen skin appeared to have scales on it, but it was actuallydifferent hues of green making it look like scales. He had orangesnake eyes, a tail as long as he was tall, and black horns thatcurved out from the center of his bald head and nearly touched atthe top. The sight of him made most humans go in the otherdirection long before he ever revealed all his razor-sharpteeth.

The rest of the nearly two hundred demonsgathered before me kept their gazes focused on me. I could havegathered more here, but large numbers against Lucifer had neverworked before. We also had to leave the wall well-guarded, or itwould be vulnerable to attack, and the wall had to remain intact ifthere was any hope of saving the human race.

Clearing my throat, I stepped forward totell the demons about our intentions to enter Hell tomorrow.

CHAPTER 5

River

Arms sliding beneath me caused me to stir asI was lifted and cradled against a familiar, solid chest. Myeyelids fluttered open. I hadn’t meant to fall asleep, but judgingby the position of the moon, it was well past midnight.

“Kobal?” I murmured and nestled againsthim.

“How many other men are carrying youaround?” he asked gruffly.

I rested my hand against him. “Only the onesI’m sleeping with.”

A rumble of displeasure caused his chest tovibrate beneath my head. I chuckled as my fingers slid over hisshirt. The last of my sleepiness faded away when I traced theetched muscles of his pecs before moving lower over the line carveddown the center of his chiseled abs.

His hands tightened on me when I shifted myposition to dip my fingers toward the waistband of his pants. “Youneed sleep,” he said.

“I need you more.”

His black eyes were unreadable when they metmine. A smile played across my lips while I rubbed my fingersagainst the head of his erection. He stopped walking as we arrivedat our sleeping place, tucked discreetly in the woods. As headjusted me in his arms, a shiver raced down my spine when mybreasts slid enticingly down his chest while he lowered me to theground.

He untied and tugged off his boots beforeturning to pull back the blankets on the makeshift bed he’d createdfor us. Exhaustion tugged at me as I stared at the inviting bedbefore turning my attention back to him. I could sleep when I wasdead, which may be sooner rather than later.

Quickly shedding my own boots, I tossed themaside before resting my hands on the waist of his pants andclasping the button.

“You’re tired,” he said gruffly.

“I’m awake now,” I assured him as I slippedthe button free and pulled the zipper down. “And I want you.”

He reached for my shoulders, but I steppedaway from him. “I’m doing the touching, only me,” I told him.

His hands fell back to his sides. Satisfiedhe wouldn’t try to grab me again, I stepped into him once more. Theheat of his body, warmer than mine but not unpleasantly so, causedmy nipples to tingle when they came into contact with hischest.
