He truly hoped he could keep that promise, but it would be impossible if they didn’t move soon. Releasing her,he rose to inspect the handful of guards making their way throughthe cells toward them. They were using the thick glass to keep themprotected.
Right now would be a great time for Lucy toset all the Savages free, but he doubted they would get that lucky. He exchanged a look with his siblings and Dante. Without a word, they split up and ran in different directions.
Gunfire followed his movements as he racedtoward Brian, Aida, and Julian. From the corner of his eye, he sawCassidy also taking another pathway toward them while Ethan andDante ran toward Willow and Declan.
He’d almost made it to Julian when movementon his right caught his attention. He spun as a guard slipped outfrom behind one of the cages. A flash of fire erupted from the endof the gun aimed directly at his heart.
Kyle twisted to the side as the bulletwhistled past him. It tore open his shirt, spilling his blood. Hespun out of the way and threw himself to the ground as the guardrepeatedly fired at him.
Rolling across the ground, Kyle scrambled tohis feet as a click sounded behind him. Realizing the asshole wasout of ammo, Kyle changed course, and going in low, he encircledhis arms around the man’s waist and slammed him into theground.
He jerked the gun from the man’s hands andlifted it above his head. The guard threw his hands up to protecthimself, but it wouldn’t do him any good.
“No!” Melanie’s screamed as she slapped herhands against the glass.
The sight of Kyle’s murderous fury causedpanic to swell inside her. The guard deserved to pay for nearlykilling Kyle, but she couldn’t let him kill the man in cold blood.Killing to protect himself and his family was one thing, butbashing in the skull of a man he’d already defeated was somethingelse entirely.
“Kyle,no!”
Melanie’s scream pierced through thebloodlust consuming him. Keeping the gun raised over the guard, helifted his head to meet her wide, terrified eyes.
He so badly wanted to beat him until theblood stopped flowing from his corpse, but he couldn’t do it infront of her. A snarl tore from him, but he lowered the gun andused his fist to knock the man out.
Zip ties hung at the guard’s side, and hepulled them free before rolling him over to bind his arms and legs. The Savage trapped in the cage nearest him battered the glass untilKyle finally looked at it.
“Kill him!” the Savage shouted.
Kyle ignored the creature as well as theseething, bloodthirsty demon inside him. If he allowed himself tocrack and kill this bastard, he would brutally kill every guard inthis room.
These fuckers had imprisoned him and Melanie;they’d shot at him, at his family, and his father could well bedying. He would gladly bathe in the blood of these pricks if heallowed himself to kill one of them, and he couldn’t let thathappen.
He would lose her forever if he did, and evenif he didn’t survive, that isnotwhat his father would wantfor him.
His attention shifted back to Melanie beforehe glanced at the window for the control room. He didn’t see anyonethere.
Were the others still alive? Would they beable to get Melanie free, or had they all been lured to theirdeaths?
“Kyle,” Julian hissed.
Kyle shoved aside the possibility they wereall mice in the crosshairs of the trap about to spring. He pushedhimself away from the guard and sprinted over to join hisfamily.
CHAPTER 48
They had no choice butto enter the hallway again. They couldn’t stay trapped in theserooms. If more guards arrived, their numbers could overpower andtrap them inside.
Lucy waited while Nathan used his fingers todo a countdown from three before rushing into the hall. Mollie ranin to help as Isabelle dragged Stefan toward her while the rest randown the hall.
There were no guards inside the next coupleof doors, but some emerged from other entryways at the end andopened fire once more. They were driven into another lab, wherethey took safety from the gunfire.
“We have to keep going,” Nathan whispered.“As soon as they stop shooting, we have to move.”
The shooting ceased a second later, and witha wave of his hand, Nathan led the way back into the hall. Theyfollowed closely behind him. It was difficult to stay spaced apartin the narrow corridor, making it easier for the guards toconcentrate their shots on them.
Even still, many of the bullets went wide asthe panicked guards fired erratically on the vampires closing in onthem. However, not all their shots missed.
David shouted and staggered back but didn’tgo down. Maggie clutched his arm to keep him up and helped to pullhim forward. He hobbled for a couple of steps before regaining hisnormal gait, but a trail of blood followed him.
As they closed in on the guards, the men andone woman retreated into the last lab in this section of the hall. They took up a position against the back wall as they prepared tofight to the death.
