Lucy raised her hand to start hittingbuttons. She’d set every one of the Savages free. There was achance they would attack Kyle and his family, but she believedthey’d be more likely to go after the ones who imprisoned themhere. They wouldn’t hesitate to destroy their captors.
She didn’t feel any remorse about it either. These people deserved what they got.
“If you hit those buttons, I’ll shoot you,”Delilah vowed.
Lucy didn’t look at her as she replied. “Ifyou do, make sure you hit my heart.”
Although a couple of feet separated them, shefelt the shock running through her mother’s body. Delilahunderstood exactly what she meant. Even still, Lucy turned andgrinned at her mother, making sure the woman saw her fangs.
Lucy grasped the gun and yanked it away fromher mother as the woman pulled the trigger. A bullet struck thecontrol panel. Lucy didn’t even blink over the fact her mother hadfired a loaded weapon at her.
She didn’t look at Delilah as she hit all thebuttons, releasing every occupant of those cages, includingMelanie.
“If I were you, I’d run,” Lucy said and wavedat her mom.
She’d spent her entire life afraid of andbeat down by this woman; she would not be afraid anymore.
“Good luck,” Lucy said and walked out of theroom.
She felt like a weight lifted from hershoulders as she stepped into the hall. She would never see hermother again, and she was neither sad nor happy about it. She wassimply free.
“We have to go,” she said to the others.
Nathan draped David’s arm around hisshoulders and led him down the hall toward the others. They slippedout the door of the other stairwell and slammed it closed.
Isabelle knelt by Stefan’s side. She cradledhis head in her lap as her eyes burned with fire. Stefan’s chestrose and fell as the bullet backed its way out of his skull.
“Is Melanie free?” Vicky asked.
“I set them all free. And I think the Savageswill be more than happy to start killing. There are a lot ofinjured down there.”
“I’m going down,” Vicky said.
“We all are,” Nathan said.
CHAPTER 50
Kyle lifted his headas clicks sounded around the room. From experience, he knew whatthat click meant. The glass cages began to descend from theceiling.
“Shit!” he hissed.
It was the right move to make, but he’dexpected to be near Melanie when they were all freed. Instead, shewas in the middle of the room and the center of all theSavages.
“Kyle, go!” Brian shouted at him.
Kyle shoved aside the guard he’d been beatingand leapt to his feet. Bullets zinged past his head, hit theground, and crashed into the descending glass around him. A couplehit him in his shoulder and upper thigh.
He didn’t let the impacts deter him. Instead,he used the pain to fuel his determination to protect her.
The glass was almost to Melanie’s head, andthirty feet still separated them when a Savage appeared on theother side of her cell. The creature was only twenty feet away andnarrowing in.
It must see her as an enemy because she oncewasthe enemy. Plus, she was an easy first meal when it hadbeen denied proper nourishment during its imprisonment in thisplace.
Kyle hadn’t believed it possible, but terrorspurred him to even faster speeds. The demon inside him swelleduntil it pounded through every part of him. The red and black colorcovering his skin pulsed and shifted as his muscles bulged and hisfangs throbbed. He would tear that thing apart if it touchedher.
“Melanie, get down!” he shouted as bulletsbounced off the glass encasing her.
Melanie hit the ground as Kyle leapt into theair. His legs kicked like he was walking on air, and he seemed tobe flying as he soared toward her. Grasping the edge of thedescending glass, he pulled himself over the edge a second beforethe Savage did.
