By this time, Lucy was starting to slur.
“We should probably go,” Melanie toldKyle.
“Why don’t you stay until I finish, and I’lltake you home,” he said.
She hesitated long enough for Lucy to jumpin. “That sounds great. Besides, I’m still drinking.”
Melanie opened her mouth to say…. She had noidea what she was going to say, so she closed it again and settledonto her chair. She was in no rush to leave anyway.
“Last call is in an hour,” Kyle said. “I’llbe done by one-thirty.”
Melanie nodded, and Lucy sipped her water ashe walked away.
“We should have gone home,” Melanie said.
“I’m not going home,” Lucy said.
“What do you mean?”
Lucy held up her phone to reveal a textmessage from Doc. Of course, that wasn’t his real name; it wasAndrew. Lucy put him in her phone as Doc because they met at aHalloween party where he dressed as a doctor.
That was three years ago, and Doc was theonly person Lucy had ever stayed in contact with after sleepingwith them. Lucy claimed he was fantastic in bed and didn’t ask anyquestions, so he was perfect. Melanie suspected she also liked him.It wasn’t a love match, but Andrew was easygoing and fun.
“The apartment’s free for the night,” Lucysaid.
Melanie glanced at Kyle. “He’ll think wearranged this.”
Lucy waved her hand through the air. “Sowhat? Besides, I’m not leaving yet. Doc is meeting me here.”
Before she could reply, Lucy stood on hertiptoes to wave over the crowd.
“There he is,” Lucy said.
Doc waved back at her before weaving his wayacross the bar to them. With his reddish-brown hair and a smilethat lit up his blue eyes, he was handsome in the boy-next-doorkind of way. When he reached Lucy’s side, he rested a hand on theback of her chair and bent to kiss her.
“Hey, Melanie,” Doc greeted when he finishedwith Lucy.
“What’s up, Doc?” she asked. It was theirnormal way of greeting each other.
The three of them talked until Cassidyfinished her last song and the lights in the bar brightened.
Lucy jumped up from her stool. “That’s ourcue to leave.”
When she swayed a little, Doc rested his handon her shoulder to study her. “You okay?” he asked.
“Yeah. My legs fell asleep. I also might havehad one shot too many.”
“Want to get pancakes on the way back to myplace?”
“That sounds fantastic.” Lucy leaned over andkissed Melanie’s cheek before whispering in her ear. “Have funtonight. I know I will.”
Melanie rolled her eyes. “Be careful.”
“Always.”
She watched Lucy walk away before turningback to the bar. From the other end, Kyle smiled at her, and hermouth went dry.
