She continued to stare at it as she tried to comprehend what she was seeing. “How is that possible? Did you take the bullet out?”

“No, it worked its way out.”

“What would make it dothat?” she asked incredulously.

“I gave you some of my blood.”

Elena’s jaw dropped, and she swore her stomach hit the ground as the world lurched. Feeling as if she were underwater, everything blurred, and she blinked rapidly to keep it in focus.

For a frightening second, she thought she would pass out as his revelation ran on a sickening loop in her head. He’d givenhersome ofhisblood!

I have vampire blood in me!

She almost bolted out of bed, but though she felt fantastic for someone recently shot, her legs wouldn’t support her if she tried to get up now. Instead, she lifted her gaze to glower at the creature across from her.

When Logan saw the fury burning from her eyes, he braced himself for the wrath he’d expected to face.So much for earning her trust.

But he’d take her wrath over her death.

“How dare you!” she exclaimed.

“You would have died without it.”

“You don’t know that!”

“Yes, I do. You were both bleeding too much to survive without my blood or a hospital.”

“Then take us to a hospital.”

“And have the hunters catch up with us? That would have led to mine and Asher’s death.”

“You could have left me there and given your blood to your friend.”

“I could have,” he admitted. “But I wasn’t leaving you anywhere when I couldn’t be sure you were safe, and I couldn’t have you falling into the hands of hunters who may also wantyoudead.”

Elena hated that his argument was so reasonable. She was spoiling for a fight, and he was calm and sensible. Vampires were supposed to be bloodthirsty monsters itching for a fight as badly as she was.

“You hadnoright to give me your blood without my permission.”

“You weren’t exactly in the condition to give it.”

She huffed and folded her arms over her chest again. “I don’t want to be like you.”

“It’s a good thing you won’t be then. You weren’t close enough to death, and I didn’t give you enough blood for the change to occur.”

“If I wasn’t close enough to death, then why do it?”

“Because if I hadn’t done it when I did, you’d be dead now. Which means you wouldn’t be sitting here yelling at me for saving your life.”

Despite the fact she was glaring at him again, he couldn’t help admiring how beautiful she was when she was fuming. He imagined she was far lovelier when she smiled, but he doubted he’d ever see one of those from her.

I’ll make her smile one day, he decided.

Elena bit her tongue against screaming at the vampire. It seemed wrong to yell at the person who’d saved her life, but she’d never expected to find herself in a situation where she had evil, tainted, vampireblood inside her.

It took everything she had not to claw at her arms, peel the skin away, and tear open her veins until it poured out of her. But as much as she hated having his blood inside her, she’d prefer not to kill herself.

However, she couldn’t shake the dirty feeling clinging to her. Vampires were monsters, and they were killers….
