“Yes. They’re twins.”

“I’ve heard of them. Well, of course, I have. Nathan was the leader of all the hunters before he decided to work with the vampires and some hunters split away.”

“He’s a good man.”

“And he’s with a vamp now too, right?”

“Yes.”

Elena fiddled with her napkin as she pondered his revelations. “You know, I never really considered that the men might not like the way things were too. You got to go out in the world. You hunt with each other and are like brothers, while the women stay home and knit or cook while trying not to worry their husband might not come home. Of course, they all become like sisters, but they still never see anything beyond the compound. I believed everyone was so close until someone murdered my father.”

She stared at the wall across from him as a fresh wave of misery assaulted her. If she was learning more and focusing on other things, she could keep the sorrow at bay, but when she remembered what happened at the compound, it came back over her like a tidal wave.

“I’ve come to realize not everything is as it seems,” Logan said. “There was a time when I hated vampires more than anyone else. I would have killed them all myself if I could. Nathan is one of my best friends, but I was infuriated when he agreed to work with them. I considered him a traitor.”

“Then what happened?”

“I’m not sure. Originally, I intended to leave, like many of our compound did, but I’ve been with Nathan since we were toddlers. I wasn’t ready to turn my back on him, and I thought he’d come to his senses and realize he’d made a huge mistake. When that time came, I planned to help him destroy the vampires.

“But then, I got my ass saved by a vamp a time or two, and I realized they weren’t as bad as we’d all believed. Over time, I came to learn Nathan made the right choice. We’re all about to face the biggest threat we’ve ever faced, and we’re stronger together than we are apart.”

“And that threat is the demons who created our bloodlines?”

“Yes.”

“Okay, it took a while, but now that we’re back to this, tell me what is going on.”

Logan clasped his hands behind his head and leaned into them as he filled her in on everything he knew about the demons seeking to create more Savages. He told her how they’d spread out to take control of some towns and were trying to destroy anyone who wasn’t on their side.

By the time he finished, Elena’s blood was like ice as it pumped through her, and the hair on her arms stood on end. At one point in his revelations, she almost slapped her hands over her ears to shut him out. Ignorance was bliss after all.

But she’d prefer not to have this ignorance become a demon trying to impregnate her. She’d run away because a hunter wanted to impregnate her; she sure wasn’t going to have a demon on top of her.

“Shit,” she muttered.

“Yep.”

“How does the Alliance plan to stop them?”

“The only way we can, by fighting. If we’re going to survive, they have to die.”

“And you need more men to do that.”

“We need morefighters,” he corrected. “We have more than a few women in the Alliance, and all of them are lethal.”

Elena smiled over this. “Good. How do I know you’re telling me the truth?”

“I suppose you can’t know for sure, but it would be quite an elaborate story to make up.”

“It would,” she agreed. “Am I a prisoner here?”

She hoped her abrupt change in topic would throw him off and not give him time to think about his response. She expected the truth to come out first.

“No,” Logan told her. “You’re free to go.”

He was surprised by the amount of anger that accompanied his words. He liked her and didn’t want her to leave. It was an insane, strange notion to have, considering he barely knew her, but he genuinely enjoyed what he did know of her.

Logan smiled at her, but he worried his smile came across as more Hannibal Lecter than Mr. Rogers.
