The startled look that crossed his face revealed her answer before he blurted, “No! I liked Alejandro. He was a good man and a good ally; I wouldneverkill him.”

Elena studied him before coming to her conclusion. “I believe you.”

He didn’t say anything as he rested his hand on the TV stand. “I can’t imagine what you’re going through right now, but you can trust Logan and me. He kept us alive, and we’ll both keep you safe.”

Elena almost told him that she could protect herself but bit back the words. There was no reason for her to be antagonistic toward him.

“How are you feeling?” Asher asked.

“A lot better. You?”

“Same.” He walked over to his bed and settled onto it. “Logan won’t be gone long, but when he comes back, we’re going to have to leave. We can’t stay still in case they’re still hunting us.”

“I know.”

“You’re going to have to decide what you want to do when he returns.”

Elena met his gaze before glancing toward the door. She had such a short amount of time to decide her future, but then, she already knew what she had to do.

Chapter Twelve

When Logan returned, his color was a lot better, and his step a lot lighter. His shoulders were back, his eyes twinkled, and he breezed into the room with the confidence of one who knew their place in this world.

She’d never been that confident, but then her place in this world had always been one of uncertainty. Until she ran away from the compound, she’d never felt in control of her life. But she didn’t have much control on the streets either; she just got to make her own decisions for a change. Those decisions didn’t always go as planned.

When Logan saw she was awake, he stopped to smile at her. Despite knowing what had created this rejuvenated air about him, she had to admit it was a lovely smile. Then she inwardly groaned and hated herself a little bit for thinking it.

“You’re awake,” he said.

“You’re back and well fed,” she replied.

When his smile faded, she inwardly kicked herself for sounding so bitchy.

“We all do what we must to survive,” he replied before shifting his attention to Asher. He held up a phone. “I got one.”

“Where did you get that?” Elena asked.

“Gas station about a mile down the road,” Logan answered. “You can call your mom from it.”

Relief cascaded over her. She knew how anxious she was about her mom; she couldn’t imagine what her mother was going through after watching her daughter get carried off by a vampire.

“Let us call Ronan first,” Logan continued. “We have no idea of the hunters’ tracking capabilities, and they’re a lot closer to us than the Alliance.”

“Of course,” she murmured.

“Do you remember Ronan’s new number?” Asher asked Logan.

“I do.”

Logan pulled out the phone card he purchased with the phone. He set up all the information before dialing Ronan’s number. The vampire king picked up after the third ring.

“Hello,” Ronan said.

“It’s Logan. We’ve got a problem.”

“What happened?’

While Logan filled him in on what happened, Ronan didn’t speak until he finished.
