And for some reason, she was certain Logan could give her those minutes, and shecravedthem. The past two days had all been so awful, and she would give anything to make it all stop.

Elena glanced away from him, but not before Logan detected the increased beat of her heart and the strengthening scent of lemons.

“You smell like lemons,” he murmured.

Elena’s eyes flew back to him as a flutter started in her belly. He was too close;theywere too close, yet she wanted to get closer.

“It’s a wonderful scent,” he said.

A small thrill of pleasure ran through her as she flattened her palms against the motel wall. “You smell like nutmeg,” she blurted before she could stop herself.

This time, the flutter was in her heart when he gave her a charming, lopsided smile that lit his eyes.

“Is that good or bad?” he asked.

“It’s good,” she said.

His smile widened, and her traitorous body reacted like he was the sun and she was a helpless planet caught in his gravitational pull. Wood bit into her fingernails when they dug into the building.

Logan tenderly clasped her chin and ran his thumb over her silken skin. She was so beautiful. He held her gaze and waited for her to tell him no as he bent to kiss her.

At first, Elena didn’t know how to react to the brush of his lips over hers. The past few days had been nothing but a jumbled mess of emotions, heartache, and confusion, but the second his lips touched hers, it all quieted and there was no confusion.

It was simply impossible to be confused about anything when his mouth on hers felt so completely right. She’d been kissed before, butneverlike this. She felt this kiss to the center of her soul. Her hands moved away from the wall to twist in his shirt.

He didn’t taste of blood. Instead, he tasted of water and something sweet that she couldn’t quite put her finger on, but she wanted more of it.

Even as she was drawing him closer and being swept away by the promise of forgetting her sorrow, reality crept in. When his tongue touched her lips, she opened her mouth to him, but as she experienced the delicious taste of him, she was aware it had to end.

There were far too many things between them and far too much going on in her life right now.

Elena broke the kiss and twisted her head to the side as she ducked it away from him. Right now, she couldn’t meet his eyes. Would he be the man who just dislocated both of Mateo’s knees before draining his blood or the man who looked at her like she was the only woman in the world?

To her, the second man was far more dangerous.

Logan stared at Elena’s bent head as her lashes curled against her cheeks. He released her chin to caress her cheek before turning her head toward him.

When her lashes swept up, he lost himself to the beauty of those pure black depths. He stroked her cheek with his thumb as confusion shimmered in her eyes.

“I’m not going to hurt you,” he promised.

She longed to believe him, but she was starting to consider him more treacherous than Mateo. If she wasn’t careful, this vampire might crush her heart.

“This shouldn’t be happening. My fatherjustdied.”

Logan closed his eyes against her anguish. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.”

When Elena stepped away from him, he removed his hand from her face and edged away from her. She hugged herself as she stared at the road.

“We’ll return them to the compound. Hopefully, there will be someone there who will listen to us and believe us,” he said.

“Juan will.”

“Are you sure you can trust him? Mateo claimed we have all the men who worked with him, but it could be a lie.”

Elena pondered this for only a second. “Yes. Juan can be trusted.”

“Then we will trust him and the hunter laws to do what is right. Once they return to the compound, there is a good chance they could end up at the end of a noose.”
