“Yes. I want you to join me,” he said with a calm he didn’t feel as his heart raced and his palms sweat.

“You thinkI’myour mate?”

“Iknowyou are.”

Chapter Forty

With her mind spinning,Elena disentangled herself from him and nearly tripped over the leg of the chair when she rose. If she had, she would have probably gone through the window. She couldn’t imagine anything worse than falling through the glass, half naked.

She righted herself before hastily grabbing her ruined underwear and shorts. She shoved them into the trash and buried them under some of the paper there. Then, she scurried over to her bureau and pulled out another pair of underwear and shorts.

She pulled them both on and turned to face him as she finished buttoning her shorts. She had no idea why she’d believed getting dressed would help her think better; it did absolutely nothing of the sort.

She dragged a hand through her hair as she tried to calm her tumultuous emotions. Logan had put his dick away and buttoned his jeans, but he hadn’t risen from the chair. His hands were white-knuckled as he gripped the ends of the chair, but his face was impassive.

He was trying to keep it hidden, but she could see his stress in those hands, the hard set of his mouth, and the flinty steel in his eyes. His eyes wereneverlike that when he looked at her. They were always warm and sparkling.

It was one of the things she loved most about him; she could just look at him and feel the warmth of his love surrounding her. That was gone now.

She’d upset him; she hadn’t meant to, but she had. However, he’d dropped abombon her.

Logan studied Elena as her gaze flew around the room. He’d known she wasn’t going to take this well, and though it hurt that she hadn’t been happier about it, he understood her reaction. And at least she wasn’t running from the room.

He almost rose to go to her, but he stayed where he was. She needed more time to contemplate things before he approached her.

He also wasn’t sure if he could control the demon enough to approach her right now. And he wasn’t going to risk it.

Elena stared at the curtains covering the window as everything that had happened sank in. She just had sex with him with her mother and the other hunter women sitting no more than fifty feet away.

If that wasn’t bad enough, now he was telling her she was his mate, and he’d like to turn her into avampire.

Vampires weren’t as bad as she’d always believed, but she’dneverwanted to be one. She couldn’t imagine having to drink blood to survive. The very idea of it made her queasy, and she had to clamp her lips against the urge to vomit.

When her gaze finally settled on him again, that white-blue color was flickering through his eyes. He struggled to control it, but he was losing the battle.

A knock on the front door caused both of their heads to turn. Elena strained to hear her mother’s footfalls as she strode toward the door. Elena had no idea who it could be, everyone who stopped by was already here.

Elena tilted her head to listen as her mother opened the front door. She couldn’t make out the words or who was speaking, but Logan’s jaw clenched as he rose and strode toward her.

“Who is it?” she asked.

“Asher.”

The tone of his voice was as rigid as him, and Elena edged out of his way. “You can’t go out there like this,” she told him. “Your eyes.”

He stopped in front of the door and, bowing his head, rubbed at his temples as he tried to calm down. All he wanted was to go somewhere and unleash his rage by battering a punching bag or wall or Savage, but he couldn’t do any of that.

He couldn’t leave this compound to hunt his own blood source. It hadn’t bothered him before, and he’d understood the hunter’s safety precautions, but he would give anything to kill a Savage right now.

But even if he could go out to hunt, he wouldn’t be able to. Asher was here, and something was wrong.

When he opened his eyes again and looked toward her, Elena nodded. He opened the door to discover Rosa only a few feet away and gliding toward him. If she looked appalled to find the door closed, she hid it well. But then, he suspected this woman knew far more than she’d ever let on.

“Your friend says it’s important,” she said.

Logan followed her down the hall, and Elena trailed him. Asher stood in the doorway, paler than normal and looking nervous in a way Logan had never seen him look before.

When he stepped outside, Elena followed. She turned to talk to her mother, but she’d already wandered back into the living room. Her mother wouldn’t stop her from doing any of this, but she wanted nothing to do with it.
