“I suppose it was only a matter of time,” Asher said. “We did everything we could to keep everyone safe, but eventually someone was going to be followed home, or slip up, or some form of technology was going to give us away. For all we know, they google earthed us, though I’m sure Roland did something to block that out.”

“He did,” Logan said.

“He can’t block out drones,” Saber said.

“Have you seen a drone flying around the compound?” Lucien asked.

“No,” Saber said. “But we might not see them.”

Speaking irritated Logan and made him more murderous, but he had to talk this out with them if they were going to survive and if he had any chance of saving Elena. “Josiah was doing something weird at the prison. He laid there for hours, not moving at all, and I mean not eventwitchingbefore all this started.”

They pondered his words as Saber turned off the main road and took random side streets to ensure no one followed them.

“Do you think he was communicating with the demons in some way?” Asher asked. “And maybe he somehow told them how to locate the compound?”

“No,” Logan said. “They would have found us sooner, and the compound in Arizona would have been compromised by now, but I think he has more intelligence and reasoning than we’ve given him credit for. I think he was fucking with us and that he’s a monster.”

And now Elena is too. Logan shoved that thought aside before it sent him over the edge. Focusing on the conversation at hand helped keep him sane, so he kept his attention on them.

“Someone messed up and accidentally revealed our location when returning from a hunt, or they used technology to find us.That’show they discovered us,” Logan said.

“Or they have someone with an ability, and they used them to help locate us,” Lucien said.

“We have to find that woman from the airport and see what she knows,” Logan muttered.

His fingers dug deeper into his palms as a ripple of bloodlust ran through him. He’d give anything to be able to go out and hunt and feast on the blood of those he killed, but he couldn’t give in to his urges. He would be useless to Elena if he went over the edge. She’d also be so disappointed in him if he became a Savage.

But he had to do something about this incessant thirst pumping through his veins. He’d consumed five bags of blood after the battle. It was far more than he normally would have drunk after a fight, but it was the only way he’d stayed somewhat stable after what happened to her.

Sorrow lanced through the frenzy building within him. He’d found love with a woman who was smart, caring, courageous, and who challenged him in ways he’d never realized he needed to be challenged. And now, all of that may be gone.

These feelings of sorrow and loss were far worse than the fury, so he shoved them aside and focused on his hatred of the Savages and demons. That hatred helped give rise to the rage keeping him going right now.

He barely noticed the different roads they took or the trees, homes, and buildings they drove past before heading back into the country and toward the prison. His skin crawled as his time away from Elena increased. Out of instinct, he reached for her with his mind, only to come up against a wall again.

Unable to stop himself, he bashed his fist into the dashboard. It splintered and cracked beneath his hand.

“Easy,” Lucien growled.

Logan’s shoulders hunched up, and his breath came faster as it took everything he had not to turn on the vampire and tell him to go fuck himself. But Lucien wasn’t telling him to calm down because it was what he wanted, he was doing it because his mate was in the vehicle and Logan was volatile.

Lucien would fight him to the death to keep Callie safe. They were already down enough fighters without the two of them turning on each other because he couldn’t get his shit together.

If the roles were reversed, he’d warn Lucien to calm down too, but he’d failed to keep his mate safe, and now she was paying the ultimate price for it. Breathing faster, he hunched forward as he sought to restrain himself while self-hatred and despair coiled like the tail of a poisonous scorpion inside him.

His hands flooded with that red-black color as his breathing became shallower, but somehow, he maintained control over himself. He wasn’t looking to fight his friends, and he would keep it together for Elena. No matter what happened, he would find a way to save her.

They pulled into the prison, but he didn’t move as he stared at the unassuming, old, brick school building. As Saber put the SUV in park, Logan’s phone went off.

It took him a couple of rings to steady his hands enough to remove the phone from his pocket. When he spotted Juan’s name on the screen, he fumbled to answer it. There could be new developments that might help Elena.

“Hello,” he said gruffly and realized his fangs remained extended. He may be mostly back in control, but the demon wasn’t relinquishing its grasp on him.

“How is Elena?” Juan asked.

Logan noticed his accent was thicker; he suspected it was due to exhaustion.

“She was sleeping when I last saw her,” Logan said. “How are Leonardo and Diego?”
