“I know.” He ran his fingers through her hair, letting it fall back across her shoulders and his chest as he played with it. “But it will keep him off our backs for a little while.”

“Good.” She was silent for a minute before she whispered. “What else happened?”

He stiffened beneath her. “Lexi—”

“I can tell there’s something else bothering you. Tell me.”

“You don’t need to know everything.”

“Yes, I do. I’m going to help you defeat this monster; therefore, I have to know as much as possible.”

“There’s no need for all the horrible details.”

“There is when those details are bothering you.” She tilted her head back to look up at him. “You were in the shower for a long time; why?”

“There was no other woman, if that’s what you’re thinking,” he said through his teeth.

He wouldn’t put it past the Lord to try to make him sleep with other women. He was sure the monster had already considered it and was probably plotting a way to try to coerce Cole into it.

“I know that, but there was something,” Lexi said.

Cole lifted his gaze to the ceiling, where the moon shining through the trees created dancing shadows that called to him. Outside, the crickets chirruped.

He watched the shadows as he idly played with her hair and told her about the fountain and pixies. When he finished, she didn’t speak as she caressed his chest.

Then her fingers tiptoed their way up to his chin. She clasped it and turned his head toward her. They stared at each other for a long while before she spoke.

“You did the right thing with the pixie.”

“I still don’t like it.”

Anguish shone in her eyes before she leaned up to kiss him. She was exhausted, and the last thing she needed was him tiring her out more, but the second their lips touched, his body came alive.

It would be so easy to lose himself in her arms, to her tender touch and the warmth and love she emanated, but when her tongue stroked his lips, he pulled back a little.

“You should rest,” he told her.

“I already rested.”

“Lexi—”

“I’ll take a nap tomorrow.”

He didn’t get the chance to respond before she hooked her leg over his and pulled herself on top of him. Resting her hands on his chest, she smiled as she pulled off her T-shirt.

She wore nothing beneath it. The moonlight caressed her skin, but out of its direct rays, she didn’t react to it like she did the sun earlier.

When she tossed her shirt aside, his hands clenched on her hips while he drank her in. Bending, her mouth found his again, and their tongues entwined. The sweet taste of her washed away the bitterness of the memories haunting him.

As they kissed, she slid her arms around his neck and pressed her breasts against his chest. His cock throbbed in anticipation, but he didn’t rush it. Instead, he savored her as he ran his palms along her back and down to her hips.

They spent a lot of time exploring each other, touching, and tasting and arousing. Eventually, they untangled enough for her to kiss her way down his body to his shaft.

When she took him into her mouth, his hips lifted off the bed, and he groaned as she tasted and teased him until he was on the verge of coming. When he couldn’t take any more of her exquisite torture, he grasped her arms and drew her back up.

Clasping her hips, he flipped her over on the bed. She giggled before biting her lip to stifle it; she gave him a sexy smile and wiggled her hips enticingly.

She knew she was driving him nuts, but two could play that game.
