It didn’t matter; she didn’t have to expose herself much to learn the answer to this anyway. Her father and Cole wouldn’t approve of her doing this, but if she didn’t have an answer tonight, it would drive hercrazy.
With a steady hand, she stuck the tips of her fingers into the moon’s rays. It took a few seconds, and it wasn’t anywhere near as bright as earlier, but a golden glow sparked to life at the tips of her fingers.
Lexi’s breath came in small pants as she snatched her hand back and released the curtain. Only sheer will kept her from smashing the curtain, kicking the wall, and screaming as she struggled to get her rapid breathing under control.
She did none of those things as her mind spun and panic nearly overwhelmed her. If she didn’t learn how to control this ability of hers, she wasscrewed. She couldn’t spend the rest of her life trapped inside; she’d never survive it.
There had to be a reason she was like this, but she had no idea how to find out what that was or what it could be.You’ll get through this. Just relax. You’ll figure this out and get through it.
She kept trying to talk herself off the ledge, but she remained teetering there. One small shove would be more than enough to push her off.
“The same thing happened.”
She jumped and bit back a squeak as she spun to face her dad. He stood in the doorway of the library, leaning against the frame as he studied her.
“I didn’t mean to scare you,” he said.
“I’m fine.”
“You don’t look it.”
Lexi imagined she looked a mess. Her hair had straggled loose from the bun she’d thrown it into, she was breathing like she’d run a race, and her eyes felt wild, but she still shrugged.
His gaze shifted to the curtained window. “Did the same thing happen in the moonlight as the sunlight?”
“Yes, well, mostly. It wasn’t as strong of a reaction.”
Sadness crept across his features as he kept his focus on the window. “You shouldn’t have done that.”
“Ihadto have an answer. It would have eaten away at me until I got it.”
“I understand.” He finally looked at her again. “You can always take the potion again. It will suppress this, and you can go back outside.”
It was so tempting that she almost leapt at the opportunity, but she couldn’t. “How long would that last?”
“It probably wouldn’t be long before your powers broke through, but it would give you time to adjust to what you are instead of plunging into it.”
“And we need the answers to what I can do so we can use it against the Lord. I can’t take the potion again.”
He gave her a sad smile. “I knew you were going to say that. You’re too stubborn for your own good sometimes.”
“You raised me.”
“And I’m going to keep you safe and make sure you have the happy life you deserve.”
Her heart warmed as she smiled at him. “I know.”
“Why don’t you go upstairs and get some rest.”
“I can’t. I have to know Cole is safe.”
“He might not return tonight.”
“I know,” she muttered. “But I’d rather stay here.”
When she started pacing again, he remained standing in the doorway. After a few minutes, he spoke again.
“I’ll be in the kitchen if you need me.”
