He lost himself to the exquisite sensation ofher sheath clenching his erection, her body beneath his, and therightness of holding her in his arms. She buried her face in thebed to muffle her cries when she came again.

The exquisite sensation of her orgasmwrenched his own from him, and his seed filled her. For a second, his hand closed around the lightning surging between them, and itfilled him with power.

CHAPTER 17

Lexi ran her fingers up and down the etchedmuscle of Cole’s chest and stomach as she lay nestled against hisside. His arm encircled her, and his hand clasped her bicep as heheld her close. Tenderly, he kissed her forehead before lying backto stare at the ceiling.

“We should go,” he said. “You should startyour training.”

“I know.”

But she was reluctant to get up. In his arms, she was safe and secure. She could forget about everything workingagainst them and trying to tear them apart.

“I think Kaylia can help us,” she said.

“I hope so.”

“At the very least, I think we can trusther.”

“Hmm,” he grunted in response.

She ran her fingers down his belly, tracingthe ridges there as she contemplated everything they’d learnedyesterday. There was one thing she’d been avoiding, but they had todiscuss it.

“What do you think about this Shadow Reaverthing?” she asked.

Holding her breath, she couldn’t bringherself to look at him as she waited for his response.

“Ever since the trials, I’ve had more of aconnection to the shadows and can control them in ways I nevercould before,” he said.

“So, do you think youarethis ShadowReaver?”

“If they have to put a name to it, they cancall me that if they want. That doesn’t mean it’s true. But even ifitistrue, I’m still me, Lexi.”

“I know,” she whispered.

But she worried he wouldn’talwaysbehim. The shadows might twist and turn him into something else…something unrecognizable.

Her hand flattened against his chest, abovewhere his heart beat so solidly. It was such a good heart, and itbelonged to one of the best men she’d ever known.

He was honorable and kind but also harsh andbrutal when necessary. He’d fought a war but not because he wantedto fight it, and those he’d killed still haunted him. They alwayswould.

He was strong and beautiful, and he loved herand his family with everything he had. She couldn’t see the shadowsever corrupting him, but they had no idea what their futures heldor where their roads would lead.

“Don’t worry about me,” he said as if hecould read her mind. “I’m not going anywhere, and I’m not going tolet anything take me over. I’m in control of me.”

“What about the prophecy?”

“Prophecies are garbage. The few that havecome true were simple things. I betnoone knows the historyof this prophecy or where it came from, not just Kaylia. Prophecieshave never been something to take seriously.”

“And we’re not going to start now.”

Cole chuckled as he kissed her foreheadagain. “No, we’re not.”

But she couldn’t shake the knot of anxietylodged in her chest and throat. He was a good, honorable man, butshe’d felt the darkness simmering inside him… and it wasgrowing.

He was the strongest immortal she knew, butwas he strong enough to withstand the power of the shadows? What ifthey corrupted him?

And it was so easy for power to corrupt.Would she lose him? Or what if somethingdidhappen to her,and it pushed him over the edge?
