“A glamour; nothing more,” Orin stated.

“True,” Kaylia said. “But many witches can’tproduce a glamour from nothing. I can.”

“That’s true,” Sahira said.

“Whether you’re a witch or not, I can teachyou about control,” Kaylia said to Lexi. “But first, you must tellme, what are you seeking to conceal?”

“When I’m in the sun or moonlight, somethingstrange happens to me,” Lexi said.

“Strange how?” Kaylia asked.

“We can discuss that more later,” Colesaid.

Kaylia looked about to protest, but sheclosed her mouth and gave a small nod.

The shadows retreated, but the memory of themstill chilled Lexi’s skin. She stared at Cole’s broad back as hisshoulders remained tensed and the muscles in his body quivered.

He was so much bigger than her as he towereda foot over her five-foot-seven height. His massive size andprotective nature made his lycan half the most noticeable. But theshadows were a newer development, and she didnotlikethem.

“What is the Shadow Reaver?” shedemanded.

Kaylia glanced away from her as Brokk steppedout from between Kaylia and Cole. “It’s a legend; one that, untilrecently, I was sure was nothing more than a story shared aroundthe cauldron to scare kids.”

Scare kids?Lexi didnotlikethe sound of that.

CHAPTER 6

“But now”—Kaylia focused on Cole again— “Iknow it’s true.”

“What is this legend?” Lexi asked in a tinyvoice much smaller than normal.

“It is a legend about a dark one who cancontrol the shadows and use them to destroy the world.”

Lexi’s stomach plummeted into her toes aswords surged out of her mouth. “You can’t possibly think that’sCole!”

“I do,” Kaylia said.

Lexi started to shake her head in denialbefore stopping. Cole released her hand and rested it on hershoulder. He gave it a gentle squeeze that did nothing to ease theterror churning in her belly.

“Cole would never do that,” she stated.

“He can control the shadows,” Kayliasaid.

“Alldark fae can manipulate theshadows,” Orin said.

“Not like him. He draws them to him, he callsthem from all around, they respond to him, theycommunicatewith him.”

“Impossible,” Varo said.

“No, it’s not,” Cole replied with a calm thatwas completely out of place with the anxiety clawing at Lexi’sinsides. “The shadows warned me when one of the crones was on themove in the crone realm.”

“So, you think you are this Shadow Reaver?”her dad asked.

Cole shrugged. “Maybe, maybe not. Right now,it’s not at the top of my list of things to worry about. Theshadows help me, and I will use them to keep Lexi safe.”

“Maybe…” Lexi swallowed before speakingagain. “Maybe you should stop using them.”

“I’ll do whatever’s necessary to protectyou.”
