They would come back.

And when they did, she would be here for him,and she would help chase them away again.

So, no matter how shitty everything else wasor how uncomfortable the ground, she would enjoy every stolenmoment she got with him, even if it included stone.

“Aren’t there any stars in this realm?” sheasked.

“It doesn’t seem so, but every outer realm isdifferent.”

“Interesting,” she murmured.

Lifting a piece of her hair, he ran itthrough his fingers as he played with it. She loved when he didthat. She nestled closer and rested her hand on his chest as hetwined some of her hair around his finger before releasing it.

“A dragon burned off my dress,” shemurmured.

He stiffened beneath her before chuckling.“That’s not something you hear every day. But then, a dragon’s firewould have turned anyone else to ash, so no one else could ever sayit.”

“Yet here I am.”

“Here you are.”

“It was a pretty dress.”

“I’ll get you another.”

“I didn’t love it enough to go through morefittings.”

He laughed before nuzzling her temple andkissing her. “Understandable.”

She studied the moon as it moved across thesky and recalled the blast of heat that burned her clothes away. Ithadn’t scared her; instead, it filled her with excitement as thefire whipped around her.

“The Lord’s men set the stable on fire,” shewhispered.

“I heard.” Cole ran her hair through hisfingers. “You should have stayed away from the stable and fledhere.”

“It’s funny you should say that when I sawTorigon here.”

“I said youshouldn’thave done it; Ididn’t say I don’t understandwhyyou did it.”

It was her turn to laugh. “I’m going to saythe same thing to you about Torigon.”

“And it would be deserved.” He paused. “I’vefailed as the dark fae king.”

Lexi’s heart ached for him, but she hated theblame he put on himself when he didn’t deserve it. “You haven’tfailed. You got most of them safely out of the Gloaming.”

“And now they’re being hunted by the Lord andon the run.”

“We’ll figure out a way to help them.”

He ran his fingers through her hair again.“We will.”

“You’re doing a good job, Cole. There’snothing you could have done differently against the Lord.”

They stopped talking for a little whilebefore he spoke again.

“The darkness and shadows are growing insideme.”

Lexi’s hand flattened on his chest; her eyesclosed as she tried to deny his words. She wanted to deny it, butnot only had she seen it, he was well aware of what he was and hisabilities. He wouldn’t say this if it weren’t true.
