The man moved away from her as Asher bent and picked up a set of keys from the floor. When he moved, she saw a chunk had been torn out of the back wall.
“Is that from a bullet?” she asked as she gestured toward the wall.
Asher glanced at the wall where the bullet had struck far too close to him. “Yeah.”
He shoved the keys in his pocket, strode toward her, and shut the door behind him.
“Are you okay?” Brie asked.
The trepidation in her eyes and on her beautiful face warmed the chill that seeped into his bones when the Savage appeared in front of his cell. And now, he was out of his cell, staring at the most beautiful woman in the world, and that fucker was behind bars.
Brushing his fingers across her cheek, he leaned toward her and kissed her before he could think too much about it. Her lips were as warm and inviting as he’d imagined, her breath as sweet, and he lost himself to her as instead of pushing him away, she leaned into him.
When Asher clasped her cheek and kissed her, Brie didn’t know how to react at first. Her emotions were still all over the place from fearing he was dead, and now excitement and lust clamored through her until she could barely breathe.
As his tongue caressed hers, she felt like she was falling into something, becoming part of something, and losing herself in a way she never had before. She’d been kissed numerous times, but none of them had ever made her feel like she was coming home… until now.
And it would be so unbelievably easy to lose herself forever in him, except they were standing in the middle of a police station with a Savage in the next room. She pulled away from him and bowed her head.
“We have to take care of all this,” she whispered.
Asher caressed her cheek before brushing his fingers across her silken hair and releasing her. “Let’s get this over with and get out of here.”
When he held his hand out to her, Brie didn’t hesitate before taking it.
CHAPTERTWENTY-FIVE
“Another officer is gettingthe box for us,” Brie said as Asher pulled the door open and she went through.
She released his hand as they returned to the police station’s main lobby. The woman emerged from the room again as the door closed behind them. In her hands was the box.
Brie’s heart leapt at the sight; she barely noticed the phone and gun the woman also held as her gaze remained riveted on the book. “Is the stone in there?” she asked Asher in a choked voice.
“I don’t know,” Asher said. “I never got the chance to open it.”
Her heart crashed as the woman approached with the container and held it out. If that fake book didn’t hold the stone, they would have to return to the house, which would bebad. There could be more Savages coming for them right now; they had to getoutof this town.
Plus, not only would the people be far more prepared for someone breaking into their house, but all their neighbors would be on high alert. She was also sure the police would patrol the neighborhood for a while.
“Thank you,” Brie said.
She took the box from the woman. Whatever was inside rattled as it clinked against the sides, but not enough to ease the anxiety twisting in her stomach. She took her gun, slipped it into her waistband, and pocketed her phone.
“Now, you’re going to erase every detail of information you have in your computers, in writing, on cameras, or anywhere about the two of us,” she commanded the woman.
The woman’s lips compressed into a thin line, and it was obvious this command displeased her, but she walked over to the computer behind the main desk. Her fingers flew across the keyboard as she got to work on Brie’s command.
Brie pressed the box against her chest as she and Asher walked over to stand beside the woman as she deleted their pictures, fingerprints, and the wrong names they’d given them. She should take the box and smash it against the counter as the woman worked, but if the stone wasn’t in there, they were screwed.
She couldn’t handle that disappointment right now, especially when there could be Savages closing in on them and theyhadto get out of here. Cursing herself as a coward, she kept the box held close instead of discovering what was inside. She had plenty of time for disappointment; they had to get out of this town.
“Is that everything?” Brie inquired as the last photo of Asher faded from the screen.
A muscle in the woman’s cheek twitched as she responded, “Yes.”
“Thank you for helping us,” Brie felt compelled to say.
Normally, she tried not to use this power over others. She’d once been weak and vulnerable too, and it was a feeling she never forgot, but she would do whatever it took to keep them safe and her mission on track.
