“We have to call the police,” she said. “They have to know about what’s in the cave. Those people deserve to go home, and their families should have answers.”

“Should we get further away before we call them?” Cabo asked.

“Are we at the hotel where we left you before heading to Coral Lake?” she inquired.

“Yes. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t ask questions, and there aren’t any cameras, I checked.”

“Good,” Brie said. “Do we still have the rental car?”

“I can get rid of it.”

“We should do that before calling. That psycho must have seen us pull down the road and decided to see what we were doing. Someone else could have seen the car too; we don’t need to deal with the police again on top of everything else.”

There was no way she could protect Asher if a bunch of officers showed up here. She was feeling better, but not that good. Cabo and Zina could help, but it would be best for all of them if they avoided that situation.

Plus, once he woke, Asher would be a threat to anyone near him until he fed. She couldn’t have him attacking the police officers, killing them, and becoming a Savage before he realized what was happening.

“I’ll take care of it now,” Cabo said.

“I’ll follow in the van and bring you back,” Zina said.

“Are you okay to be on your own?” Cabo asked Brie.

“Yes, I’m feeling a lot better now.”

“Good. We’ll see you soon.”

The two of them left the room. When the door clicked shut, the key turned in the lock, and silence descended. Brie lay down against Asher’s side again and rested her hand on his chest as she waited for him to wake.

CHAPTERFORTY-SIX

By the timeCabo and Zina returned, Brie had fallen back asleep. She woke when the knob rattled and turned. Leaping up from the bed, she tried to shake the disorientation from her head as she prepared to kill whoever came through the door.

With her fangs extended and every muscle in her body prepared for a fight, she relaxed when Cabo and Zina walked through the door, but her protective urges remained on high alert as she rested her hand on Asher’s good shoulder.

“Just came to let you know the car was taken care of,” Cabo said.

“Thank you,” she murmured as she settled onto the bed again.

Her friends would never harm Asher, but now that she was feeling better, she didn’t like the idea of anyone near him while he was in such a vulnerable state. She tried to clear her head of the irrational belief, but it dug in deeper.

He’s mine to protect.

As soon as the thought hit her, she knew it was all true; this man was her mate. Never had she felt such a way about another, but she would tear apart the two people she loved most to keep him safe.

“We also called the police,” Zina said. “We told them where to find the cave and the bodies inside.”

“What did they say?” Brie asked.

“When they started asking questions, I hung up. If, for some reason, they don’t check it out, I’ll call back. I’m sure we’ll know soon enough because it will be all over the news.”

Brie glanced at the old tube TV sitting on the dresser. It had been years since she last saw one, but it looked in good condition, and there was no dust on it. She’d keep an eye on the news to make sure those bodies were found. There was no way she would let those people remain hidden and continue to rot.

“We also got our own room,” Zina said, “so you two could have some space.”

“Thank you,” Brie said.

“I can’t believe he’s still out,” Cabo said.
