Which means it’s surrounded by silver,he told himself. It was, but for another thing, the damn thing glowed when it destroyed its enemies. None of these stones did that, but he’d never seen them destroy an enemy or know if they werecapableof such a thing.
Also, none of the stones they’d found looked like Willow’s. But Brie had said they were all different from each other.
None of them are in a weapon, and I’ve never seen them plunged into a demon or Savage. Maybe they would glow if they were used to kill. Plus, the sword only works like that for Willow,he reminded himself.
Would the other stones react to Willow too? Were they all meant to behers?
“I know of something that looks like what you’re describing,” he said. “It’s also completely different from the two stones I’ve seen, or it acts differently.”
Brie placed her hand on his chest as she pushed up to look at him. “How so?”
“First of all, the stone is in the most lethal and frightening sword I’ve ever seen. Second, the stone glows when it’s slashing through its enemies. None of the stones we’ve collected do that, but they might not do it because they’re not in a weapon. I don’t know for sure.”
Brie felt like she’d been gut-punched. For a second, she struggled to breathe as excitement crashed over her. Then, she scrambled to her feet and hastily gathered her clothes.
She didn’t bother with her underwear before tugging on her jeans and buttoning them. “We have to go.”
Asher frowned at her jerky movements as she shoved her underwear into her pocket and grabbed her shirt. “Go where?”
“I have to show you something.”
She pulled her shirt into place and shoved her feet into her sneakers while pushing her socks into a back pocket. Asher scrambled to dress as she stalked into the woods. He pulled on his jeans, shoved his feet into his sneakers, and gathered the rest of his belongings before jogging to catch up with her.
When he finally caught up to her, he buttoned his jeans before taking in the determination etched onto her face. She marched onward with her head high and her hands fisted.
“Where are we going?” he demanded.
“Back to the house. There’s something you have to see.”
A million questions ran through his mind, but he didn’t ask them as they emerged from the woods. He shoved his shirt and underwear under his arm as they crossed the backyard toward the house.
Cabo and Zina remained sitting on the back deck. They’d placed a bottle of tequila and shot glasses between them. They each took a shot as laughter sounded from Cabo’s phone. They made a face before slamming the glasses down; Cabo poured another round.
Cabo lifted the bottle and waved it at them as they approached. “Care to join us? We’re playing your favorite game.”
“In a little bit,” Brie said.
She held open the back door, and Asher slipped inside before she followed him. “What’s your favorite game?” he asked.
“We listen to a comedy routine and take a shot every time someone says fuck. Our favorite ones to do it to are Carlin and Pryor.”
“Can you still walk afterward?”
“Sometimes, but we’d probably be dead if we were human.”
Despite the tension still emanating from her, he chuckled. “I have no doubt, I’d like to play one day.”
“Oh, we will. I have a feeling we’ll all be looking to drink soon.”
She led the way down the hall and to the door leading into the basement. Pulling the door open, she flicked on the switch and swiftly descended. Once at the bottom, she crossed the concrete floor.
“Let me,” Asher said and started toward her when she grasped a metal shelf and lifted it out of the way.
“I’ve got it.” She set the shelf down after a few feet.
When she stepped out of the way, she exposed a flat expanse of the concrete wall before leaning over and pushing on a section that looked no different than the rest of it. Asher’s eyebrows rose when something clicked and a piece of the wall swung open to reveal a safe.
Red lights crisscrossed the front of the safe, so close together he doubted he could get a finger through them without hitting one. On the inside of the wall panel was a keypad; Brie tapped in a few numbers, and the red lights disappeared.
