“Hey, how’s it going?”Nathan asked when he answered his phone.

“Things have taken quite an interesting turn,” Asher said. “I’m coming home tomorrow and bringing three others with me. I’ll also be bringing some things that might help us defeat the demons.”

Now that he’d seen all the stones and the glow in Brie’s broken sword, he wanted to rush her back to the Alliance as fast as possible. The Alliance members might not be as secure as they were in the compound, and they were more scattered, but they were still powerful, and there was strength in numbers.

The sun was setting, and even if they were unlikely to encounter any problems traveling at night, they’d agreed to wait until morning. The sun would offer them more protection against their enemies.

Through the line, Nathan’s feet hit the ground. He must have been sitting with them propped on a desk or something. “What have you found?”

“It’s too much to explain right now,” Asher told him. “Are you still at the prison?”

“Yes, we can’t move the inmates anywhere.”

“How’s Elena doing? Any luck with the blood transfusions?”

“None. Now, Logan is draining himself and saving only his blood for her. He’s hoping if it’s the only blood she receives, the mate bond will push the demon blood out of her.”

Asher glanced at where Brie sat on the bed with her hands clasped before her while she stared at the floor. If their roles were reversed, he’d be as desperate as Logan to save her.

“It is an incredibly strong bond,” he said, but he suspected Nathan was as doubtful as him that Logan’s plan would work.

“It is,” Nathan agreed.

“Tell him not to kill himself,” Asher said.

“I’ve told him that. My opinion doesn’t mean anything right now.”

“None of ours do, but I don’t blame him.”

“Neither do I.” Nathan paused before continuing. “Are you bringing your mate with you, or will you try to keep her out of this?”

Nathan already knew Asher had gone through the change and bonded with Brie. “There’s no keeping her out of this; she’s been in it for longer than either of us.”

“Is this a story I’ll get to hear?”

“At least some of it. Two of her friends will be coming with us; they’re involved in this war too.”

“Looking forward to meeting them.”

And Asher was looking forward to seeing his family again as well as having Brie surrounded by protection.

“Be safe on your way home,” Nathan said.

“We will. See you soon.”

Asher hung up and set Brie’s phone on the table beside the bed they shared. She lifted her head to stare anxiously up at him.

“How are Logan and Elena doing?” she asked.

“No change, except now he’s draining himself of his blood and giving heronlyhisblood in the hopes it will save her.”

Brie winced at the imagery and closed her eyes; she rubbed at her temples. The amount of grief Asher’s friend must be suffering tore at her heart. She knew that kind of sorrow; she’d endured and survived it, but he wouldn’t survive the loss of his mate.

Asher walked over and sat beside her. Taking her hand in his, he settled it between his legs and clasped it there as he stared at the wall.

“I’m afraid I’m going to lose him,” he admitted.

Brie rested her head on his shoulder. “I know. And I wish I could say you won’t, but there are no guarantees in this world.”
