“It sure doesn’t look like it.”

Sahira shrugged. “We’ve been going through our Books of Shadows to see if there’s something about the arachs we might have missed. Maybe some way to get your magic to open up.”

Lexi’s heart leapt with excitement. “Any luck?”

But as she asked it, she knew the answer. Kaylia and Sahira wouldn’t look so exhausted if they’d found something, and they would have told her as soon as they did.

“Not yet,” Kaylia said.

“You should be taking care of yourselves,” Lexi told them. “There’s not going to be any answers in your books. Maybe there are some in Dragonia, but we’ll never know while the Lord is on the throne.”

“That doesn’t mean there aren’t answers somewhere. I might have a friend who can help. She knew the arach and worked with them.”

“That would be great!” Lexi blurted at the same time Cole growled from behind them, “Who is it?”

Lexi turned to discover him a few feet away. She hadn’t heard him arrive.

Kaylia’s shoulders went back as she turned to face him. “A light fae who’s nearly twice my age.”

CHAPTERTWENTY-FIVE

If someone had puttheir finger against her forehead and pushed, Lexi would have fallen over. As it was, she barely managed to keep her jaw from dropping. No one had mentioned working with the light fae simply because they knew the light fae wouldn’t help them anyway.

Varo was half light fae, and evenhehadn’t suggested working with his people. But she also had no idea how close he was to his mom, how the light fae felt about him being half dark fae, or if he had any contact with them.

The witches shunned Sahira for being half vampire; maybe the light fae had done the same to Varo for being half dark fae. And they all knew the light fae wouldnotfight. They made that clear during the last war the Lord waged.

“This fae was around the arach. She knew them better than I did; she may have some insights I don’t have,” Kaylia continued. “I’d like to go to Lumus to speak with her.”

“Will she be willing to help?” Lexi asked.

Cole’s upper lip curved into a sneer, but he didn’t protest her words. At this point, they would take any help they got.

“I don’t know,” Kaylia admitted. “The light fae have locked themselves away. They know the Lord doesn’t like them—”

“Does anyone?” Cole inquired.

“I do,” Kaylia retorted. “They shouldn’t be compelled to fight if they don’t want to.”

“No, but they also shouldn’t sit idly by and watch as the Lord unleashes havoc on the realms. They may be against fighting, but they’re okay with the Lord destroying others as he rolls over the realms. He’ll go for them too. He no longer cares how much carisle they pay him in taxes; he’s determined to destroy everyone.”

“I agree, but I’m not light fae or privy to their beliefs on this. I’m just saying there’s a woman who might be able to help us.”

Cole looked to Lexi. “What do you think?”

“I think it’s worth a shot,” Lexi said. “What harm can it do?”

“The Lord could have spies in Lumus waiting for us to show up in the light fae realm.”

Lexi bit her bottom lip as she pondered this. “I don’t think we have a choice. If there’s a chance this woman has answers, then we should speak with her.”

“I think I’ll have a better chance of getting her to work with us if Lexi goes with me to find her,” Kaylia said.

“You want to take Lexi into Lumus?” Cole asked incredulously.

“They’ll welcome her there, and maybe if they realize an arach reallyisstill alive, they’ll reconsider their position about fighting.”

Lexi’s heart raced as she looked between Kaylia and Cole. Sheneverthought she’d enter the realm of the light fae. The light fae had been shunned since the war started, but they weren’t known to welcome strangers into their land even before then.
