SO THIS IS LIFE?

December 23rd

“Hello?” I answered the phone cautiously as I stepped into a side room for privacy.

“Yo, Doc. We have a problem, and only one you can solve.” Cole’s voice filtered through the phone.

“Is it Summer?”

“Nah, she’s fine. But we need you to make a house call, one of your patients is about to find himself having a medical emergency. Think you can give us a hand?” Cole spoke into the phone nonchalantly.

“Which patient?” I asked, jotting a note for the staff that I would be leaving early.

“Hold on I’ve got it here somewhere,” there was a shuffling of pages before he uttered, “Nathanial Cassidy, yeah him. What’s his address?”

“One second,” I opened the door, spotted one of the nurses’ computers and pulled it into the side room. “What makes you think he’s a patient here?”

“You’re joking right? You are one of the biggest hospitals in the state, and dude’s fucking old.” He chuckled over the phone.

“Fair point,” I didn’t bother logging out of the nurse’s credentials as I accessed the records, pulling up personal information and giving it over to Cole, who very annoyingly asked how to spell the street four times before mumbling he got it.

“Thanks doc, and before you ask she’s fine. Bigger and moodier.” The line died.

I sighed, looking at the phone, expecting something else before I cleared out of the records and pushed the station back to its spot.Well, at least things aren’t boring with this group.I dropped the note excusing myself by the nurses’s station, grabbed my bag, and headed to the address I’d given Cole.

“The fuck areyou doing here doc?” Cole asked as I knocked on his window, peering into the space.

Summer looked at me, annoyed, but didn’t say anything. Cole unlocked the door, and I slid into the backseat.

“Consider me your way in, I couldn’t help to notice that Mr. Cassidy recently had some tests done on his heart,” I shrugged.

“You know he’s dead either way right? I don’t need you getting cold feet.” Cole bit out.

“I’m aware, it’s also why I brought my medical kit in case you kill him before you get your information.” I held up my black canvas bag with the red cross on it.

“Alright, how do you want to do this?” he asked, and I smiled.

YOU WILL BURN

December 23rd

“Karter’s going to get himself killed.” Cole spoke from the driver’s seat as we watched him knock on the door.

“So what, I don’t care.” I shrugged, zipping up the coat I had on and tucking my hair into the hood.

“You didn’t mind him when you were in the hospital, and besides we all do shitty things in life.” He replied.

“Oh yeah your one to talk, news flash not everyone plans to rape a woman to trap them in a relationship. It’s not like I would have turned him down. He was nice… once.”

“Well we aren’t everyone little firefly, and besides look at what came out of that. You are carrying two beautiful baby girls who will absolutely love you.” He kissed the side of my head, and I crossed my arms.

“I would like my daughter back, perhaps instead of defending the psychotic doctor you fucking help.”

“You’re right,” he kissed my hair and then looked at his watch. “Time to go. Stay close.”
