She scoffed, but after a few beats, she closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
“It’s good, isn’t it?”
Her eyes opened, and he swore he saw a hint of a smile before it immediately disappeared.
“It’s good.”
“Where are you from?” Ethan asked.
“Texas.”
“Are you up here visiting anyone?”
She gave him the side-eye. “You’re awfully nosy.”
He chuckled. “Just friendly.”
“Overly so.”
“What do you have against friendly people?”
She scowled. “I don’t trust them.”
This made him frown. Someone made her lose her trust, and that didn’t sit well with him. Before he could ask whose legs he needed to break, one of the hikers asked about a flower growing off the side of the path.
Ethan gave her one last look before walking over to the other guest.
