MAY 21ST

Megan stared out the window of the airplane as people continued to board while turning her phone over in her hands. Then she opened her texting app.

Megan: I just boarded my flight, and I’m already bummed I’m leaving.

Jeff: Is it too soon to say I miss you?

Butterflies beat wildly in her stomach. Here they had just confessed their feelings for each other, and it already felt like they were all in.

Megan: I feel the same way.

She bit her lip and stared at the phone. She wasn’t ready to turn it off for the long flight, but wanted to look forward to a message when she landed.

Megan: Let’s play 100 questions.

Jeff: Okay. You go first.

Megan: Favorite color? Favorite meal? What’s the first thing you would take from your house if it was on fire (assuming living things were safe)? What was your first job? Dream car?

Jeff: Dang. It’ll take me a minute to answer those. I hope you’re also going to answer them.

She smiled, and an announcement came over the speakers asking people to place their devices in airplane mode.

Megan: I wanted to keep you busy while I’m in the air. Detailed answers please. Going into airplane mode. I’ll message when I land.

Jeff: Can’t wait.

When Megan landed, she took her phone off airplane mode and immediately sent her answers as his came through.

Jeff: Robin’s egg blue. Is that a detailed answer? I’m just kidding. Any blue is good. Steak is the best, especially with some mashed potatoes and vegetables to go with it. Although I tried the nachos at the bar, and those were surprisingly delicious. I wouldn’t take anything from a burning house. I’m not sentimental when it comes to objects. First job? I worked at a tree lot. It was cold. As far as cars go, anything that can handle the weather where I live. So for Wintervale, I prefer an SUV or truck with all-wheel drive… preferably blue or grey.

Megan: I’m on my layover. Teal. Nachos, duh. My purse because replacing my ID and credit cards would be a lot of work. I worked at a hardware store and pretended I knew what I was doing. I don’t have a dream car. Don’t really care about cars all that much. If it runs, it’s good.

Jeff: My turn. What’s one place you’d love to travel? What has been your favorite place you’ve traveled?

Megan raced across the airport to her next flight. When she sat down, she typed out her response.

Megan: Favorite place I’ve traveled would have to be Wintervale. A place I’d love to travel would be Ireland. I’m not sure why. It just seems like a very beautiful place.

Jeff: I agree about Wintervale. That’s why I moved here. Norway is on my bucket list. I want to see the fjords.

Megan bit her lip before typing out her response.

Megan: Maybe someday we can see them together.

Jeff: That sounds incredible.

MAY 25TH

Jeff walked into his kitchen and grabbed his coffeepot to fill with water. He stopped at the sink and stared at his plant he had dug up from the resort before the next round of frost hit. He chuckled and pulled out his phone, snapping a photo.

Jeff: I forgot to show you Fred.

Megan: Fred?

He sent over the photo of the flower.
