Rowyn shook her head.

“No. It’s good money, but I was making about the same in the last place. My job with them was done, though, and I wanted a new challenge, so to speak.”

“Right. So, it sounds like you’re challenging yourself but associating that with the negative ways your parents acted. They had kids who relied on them—you don’t. In fact, it sounds like you’re running to people who need you, not from them. You’re spending your time finding the places you’re needed most and helping them. That seems to be the complete opposite of what your parents did.”

Rowyn blinked a couple of times. Then she moved in closer and kissed Eliza tenderly.

“All this talking makes me want to not talk anymore. How soon do you need to be at work?”

Hours ago, was the truthful answer. But with Rowyn’s lips moving to her neck, Eliza struggled to remember her name, letalone how much work she had to do.

“It can wait,” Eliza said as their bodies quickly found each other again.

Chapter Fourteen

Every muscle in Rowyn’s body ached, despite not using most of them for the past twelve hours. After their leisurely morning together, Eliza had locked herself into her office to get work done and avoid temptation. Rowyn loved the idea of being that temptation but agreed that both of their bodies and minds could use a break.

Despite the aching of her body, Rowyn missed Eliza. She had crashed on the couch in the living room all day in her comfy clothes, surrounded by far too many snacks, and binge watched TV. It was bliss, but she longed to catch a glimpse of Eliza’s face to remind herself everything was okay.

They had agreed to talk more tonight before the kids got back tomorrow. Rowyn resented spending their remaining free time talking about what she wanted to do in that free time, but it was important they didn’t keep kicking the conversation down the line. Eliza left Monday morning and would be gone for the week, and Rowyn would overthink everything without some sort of agreement.

“What are you watching?”

Tingles ran up Rowyn’s spine at Eliza’s voice. She turned her head toward where an exhausted looking Eliza was walking toward her. Eliza reached her hand out and caressed the back of Rowyn’s neck as she observed the violent scene on the television screen.

“Wynonna Earp. Only the best kick-ass demon slaying TV show with sexy sapphic scenes.”

Eliza raised an eyebrow.

“That’s a lot of words, but you seem excited about them, so that’s good. Have you left any snacks, or do I need to do a restock?”

Rowyn leaned her head back against the neck massage that had come from the caress.

“There are snacks. I have real dinner waiting in the oven for you, though. As much as I love this massage, you need to go get into something comfy and I’ll get your food ready. You can eat and decompress.”

Eliza’s eyes roamed over her face, and Rowyn wanted to pick apart each minute change of features as thoughts flitted past.

“Okay, I’ll be back,” Eliza said as she turned and complied.

Rowyn’s chest fluttered at the simple yet significant shift that had occurred since yesterday. She shot into action to heat the food. When Eliza rejoined her, the food was ready, and Rowyn sat at the table where so many of their conversations had unfolded already.

“Ugh, this food is amazing. I could kiss you,” Eliza said around a mouthful of pasta.

“We’ll see about that after we talk,” Rowyn quipped.

“Decompress means different things to us, apparently,” Eliza replied with a small smile.

“Listen, you were the one worried about the light of day and regret and all of that bullshit. I’m happy to skip to the good part if you’re not gonna do a one eighty on me when we leave this peaceful bubble.”

Eliza swallowed the food in her mouth.

“Yes, fine, we should talk. But no, I’m not regretting anything. At all.”

Tension eased from Rowyn’s body, and she smiled.

“Me neither. Except maybe like a third of those snacks.”

Eliza rolled her eyes.
