Jay turned the light off, and I followed him to another room.
“And this is mine.”
The large bedroom had a king bed and a balcony overlooking the dimly lit garden. A line of trees and other smaller houses divided the property from the road, and only flickers of headlights in the distance made it through the dark greenery.
I was in Jay’s home. In his room. This was real.
Jay hugged me around my waist.
“You were great today,” he murmured. “I’m sorry Hugh was such an oaf. Kirby must be chewing him out.”
“Your big brother is a good guy. I like him.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. He’ll get used to me.”
“Hm.”
“But you didn’t tell me about Kirby and him.”
“I didn’t know if it would make things better or worse if you knew.”
I sighed. “I’ve seen them fuck, Jay.”
He just laughed. “Yes, most people have.”
“I guess. But fucking hell, warn me next time, seriously.”
“Next time? Like, if I ever bring you into another porn star’s house?”
“Well, yeah.”
“Okay. Noted.”
I glanced around at the abstract art on the wall and the lounge furniture on the balcony.
“So, you’re well off, huh?”
Jay huffed. “Kinda. Still not used to that.”
“You didn’t tell me that either.”
“Does it matter?”
I turned in his embrace and met his gaze. “I don’t know. Does it matter to you that I’m not?”
Smiling softly, Jay shrugged. “No.”
“Okay. When we get married, I’ll sign a prenup. That should shut Hugh up, right?”
“Married?”
My throat went dry. Did I just put my foot in my mouth? “I meant one day,” I said weakly.
Jay was quiet. Then he said, “Okay,” and more silence followed.
I was about to start panicking when he smirked. “By the way, I’m not that rich. So if you’re in it for the money…”
