When their mother died, Ezra didn’t want to deal with any girl mess. His words not hers. However, that changed the moment Circe Tolliver visited to wonder why Clover hadn’t come to school. She didn’t blame the teacher at all, because she knew that she was looking out for her students.Or lack of a student. Those visits into town were how she’d snapped the picture of Circe to send to Miles for the reward money. She planned to use that cash to leave Sheridan, but things hadn’t gone that way. Now, it was in the bank, gathering interest.A nest-egg for a rainy day.

“Hey, want some ice cream?”

“Are you trying to distract me from your mate?”

“Is it working?”

Clover thought for a moment.“Most definitely.”

Chapter Four

Asher wiped glasses, inspecting them against the light to make sure there weren’t any fingerprints or smudges.Whenever someone tried to tell him no one cared about water spots, he instantly rebuked them.He wasn’t just a bar owner. He was cultivating a place where there was something for all different types of people.Human.Shifter.Young.Old.Male, female, and non-binary.He wanted The Unicorn to be fancy enough to bring a date, yet casual enough for the roofing guys to get a drink after work.

His best friend, Corbin, walked in and gave a wave.Corbin was the town lawyer. They had been each other’s rock when the world felt too tough and broken.

“Did you just get back from Denver?”

Corbin nodded wearily.“I hate depositions.I’m glad I don’t do this that often.Give me a nice and boring will or land transfer any day.”

“You’re the only lawyer I know who hates being a lawyer.”

“There’s more of us then you realize.”

Asher grinned.“Wanna drink?”

“I thought you’d never ask.”

He reached behind him and grabbed a glass and quickly made a vodka martini.Corbin threw him a grateful look and then proceeded to drink the whole thing down.Asher’s eyebrows shot up.

“Please tell me you’re walking.”

Corbin waved his answer that Asher interpreted as a yes.

“Another?”

“I want to say yes, but I do have some more work I need to complete.Another drink and I’ll be putting emojis in my citations.”
