Chapter Fourteen
“Would you like to goto dinner tonight?”Asher asked.
Juni glanced over at Clover, who sat at the small kitchen table for school. She had earphones on and watched as Ms.Circe taught, scribbling notes on a piece of paper.
“I’m not supposed to go out anywhere,” she told him.
“But I’m not anywhere,” he added.“It’s just The Unicorn.”
She smiled, even though she knew he couldn’t see her.“Other than there, of course.Besides, Clover is doing homeschooling.”
“School should be over this evening. How about dinner at my house?I can pick you and Clover up and we can have a nice evening together.”
“You wouldn’t mind having Clover in your house?”
“Juniper,” he said in a soft voice.“I would love for you and Clover to come over. And ...stay.”
His words stunned her.Her mind went blank and yet sped up fast forward at the same time.“W-what?”
“Look, I know it’s only been a handful of days but there’s something between us.Something I’d like to explore, but only if you want to explore it as well.”
She thought for a moment.Heart pounding and pulse racing. The secret burning in her soul was that she wanted him for her mate.Wanted to go to bed with him every night and wake up with him every morning. She even wanted to bite him to mark him as hers.
“Juniper?”
“I’m here,” she said.“Sorry.I...I want that, too.”
Suddenly she heard a loud bang through the connection, then hollering. So many voices it was hard to decipher what was being said.
“Asher?”she asked.Nothing.“Asher?Can you hear me?”
An abrupt clatter sounded and the call immediately dropped.Juni knew something happened.Or was happening. Her wolf pushed hard, wanting out to find their mate.Save him.Protect him.Panicked, she jumped off the couch.
“Clover, stay here!”
Her sister pulled off her headphones.“What’s wrong?”
Hand on the doorknob, she looked back at her sister.“It’s Asher.Please.Stay here so I don’t have to worry about you, too.”
Clover nodded, agreeing, and Juni rushed out.She ran all the way to the bar and when she got there, she saw a mob of people in front of The Unicorn.Pushing people out of the way, she made her way inside, noticing two men holding Asher’s arms while he tried to calmly talk to the crowd of angry people.Patrons had moved back, mostly humans by their scent, and watched what was going on with confusion. The humans who lived in Sheridan were aware of the shifters and all had taken a vow to never discuss what they see.In exchange, Jericho promised them protection.
“Stop!”she yelled at the top of her voice.
Those closest to her jerked around, giving her enough room to push past them and up to Asher. The yelling stopped as she glared at the two men.
