Looking up at him, I nodded my head. “Okay, I hear you.”

“Got me up like a hoe or some shit, waiting on you to come home,” he scoffed with a shake of his head. “This shit fucking crazy.”

Although he was dead serious, I did end up laughing. It was cut short by the stern eye he shot me. I snatched the smile off my face so quick and wrapped my arms around my husband’s neck.

“I’m sorry.”

“Pigs must be flying out there.” He chuckled.

“Shut up. I know when to apologize and admit that I was wrong.”

“Listen, Lovey. This two AM shit ain’t me trying to control you. I understand you gotta handle yo business, but I need to know my wife is good out there. Fuck it. I’m just gonna get security back on you.”

I leaned my head back as a heavy groan spilled out of me. Although I loved my brother’s security detail crew, I had neverbeen a fan of walking around with a big-ass nigga all the time. I felt like it made me stick out like a sore thumb. When Priest Kaymen and J’Ru stepped down, shit got so chill for us, they pulled back security, letting Cyro and his crew get a much-needed fucking vacation. I got used to moving like a regular human being and not like the President. For the past few years, life was normal. I drove myself around, I didn’t have security, hell, I even cooked because I didn’t have a staff. I never knew how much day-to-day shit having a staff handicapped me from learning and doing on my own.

“Really, Ahk?”

He nodded his head. “Yeah. Shit about to be hot out there anyway.” His face went downcast, and I could tell something was weighting on him heavy.

“What’s the matter?”

“They killed Nymir while we was in Anguilla. Over some petty shit too. But I know this shit ain’t gone end there.”

My heart sank upon hearing Nymir was dead. He had come over to the house a few times whenever Ahk and I hosted get-togethers with our close friends and family. He was young but respectful. He even used to address me as “ma’am” until I cut that shit off and told him to call me Jazzy. Based on how quickly he elevated to being invited to intimate settings, I knew Ahk saw a lot of potential in him.

“I’m sorry, Ahk.” I kissed his lips. “Y’all find out who did it?”

“Yeah. Some young nigga called Knox. I’m gone get up with him.” Based off the way his jaw clenched and his eyes went dark, I knew this was some shit that was gonna fuck with him until this Knox nigga was put down.

“Let me know if there’s anything you need me to do.”

He craned down and pecked my lips. “Walk around with fucking security and come home before the fucking sun come up.”

I rolled my eyes, knowing that he wasn’t going to take no for an answer when it came to security. This marriage shit was really all about give and take. “I will. I’ll call Cyro.”

Satisfied that I didn’t give him back talk like everyone knew I was good for, he gripped my ass. “And another thing?—”

I groaned again. “Pa, I’m trying to get in the shower so I can take my ass to bed.”

“Should’ve thought of that shit before rolling in here at four in the fucking morning.” He nudged my head gently. “I need you to get with Nymir’s people and help them make arrangements for the funeral. Tried to get up with his grandmother, and she threw her cup of coffee in my fucking face. Claim that me and my business is what landed her grandson in the morgue.”

“She did what?!” I snapped. I cupped his face in my hands, assessing it for any possible burns from the coffee I may have overlooked.

He chuckled at how concerned I was, but in my opinion, wasn’t shit funny. “I’m good. The coffee was damn near cold, like it had been sitting. She angry and hurt that she lost her grandson?—“

“I get that, but to be throwing something in my man’s face, she gotta be insane.” A glare was cast across my face.

He shook his head as his hands trailed up from my ass to my shoulders, which he massaged in hopes of calming me down. “She missing a few fucking screws for sure, Lovey, but I’m good. She’s grieving and looking for someone to blame, so I understand. Just pull up to her crib and let her know you’re my wife and that you come in peace. Write her a check for however much she needs and let her know we’ll be taking care of the bills out of respect for Nymir.”

“Baby, if she threw coffee on you, what you think she’ll do to me?”

“Nothing. You ain’t the nigga who had her grandson trapping throughout the city. You’re likeable, beautiful, and know just what to say.” Although I would’ve rathered not face off with the woman who threw coffee in my husband’s face, I knew he was only asking me to because he really needed me to step in. He never told me no, so it was only right for me to show up for him as he would have for me.

“Fine,” I muttered. “But she won’t be throwing coffee in my face.”

“Nah, you gone have security with you anyway.” He chuckled. “Finish showering so we can go to bed.”

I kissed him once more before he exited the bathroom so I could wash up from the taxing-ass night I had.
