My phone went off at the table, and I excused myself. I took my call in the backyard after shutting the sliding door behind myself. “What’s good, Jersey?”
“Our spot in the Bronx just got hit,” he revealed. The anger in his voice let me know that a statement was made by none other than Silas.
I glanced over at the chairs me and the guys were just chopping it up at and remembered what Priest told me. My jaw clenched as I felt anger rush through my veins. “Suit the fuck up. I’m on the fucking way.”
“Copy.”
I made my way back inside, and my wife and I locked eyes. She pinpointed something was wrong immediately, so she leaned up in her seat. I walked over to her and dropped a kiss on her forehead before kissing her lips. “I gotta head out to handle something. You stay here. I’ll be back for you in the morning.”
Worry flashed her eyes as she leaned in and kissed my lips once more. “Be safe, Ahkeem, please. I love you.”
“I got you, Lovey. I love you too,” I assured her before turning to the rest of the table. “Dinner was great, y’all, but I have to head out.”
The men instantly picked up on my energy and knew that business was the reason I was being pulled away from Sunday dinner. Priest lifted his glass up at me and shot me a curt nod.
“Handle it.”
“No doubt,” I asserted before heading out.
Chapter Five
JAZZLYN
I stoodin the kitchen scrubbing the hell out of the pots and pans that were used to cook our dinner. I didn’t help cook, so the least I could do was help Britain clean up. Plus, I needed the distraction now that Ahk was off doing God knew what. Whenever he left with that cold and murderous look in his eyes, my heart would tighten. Because of his position in the game, it was a gamble if he would make it home or not.
I hated that all I could do was sit up, wait, and pray no one ever got the one up on my husband. I would’ve much rather been in the field, covering his back while he covered mine. Nobody had him like I had him, so it scared the fuck out of me each time he headed out the door.
“You good?” I heard my brother’s voice from behind me.
He was leaning against the wall with his hands in the pockets of his sweatpants. I was so lost in my thoughts, he could have been down here for a while just watching me. I nodded. “Yeah. You put Genesis down already?”
He nodded before a light chuckle aired out of him. “Yeah, Gioia ended up knocked out in his bed with him after all that food. I’m gonna head up and get her in a minute. I wanted to tap in with you.”
He walked over and grabbed a seat on one of the stools that surrounded the kitchen island. I continued to scrub at the pots like my life depended on it, desperately trying to distract myself from Ahk. “I’m good. I know where everything goes,” I assured him.
“I ain’t worried about that. You know he gone make it back home, right?”
“That shit sounds good, P, but we both know we can’t guarantee that.”
“I see the way he looks at you and puffs up his chest if anybody comes at you sideways. Trust me, Jazzy-Fae. He’s coming back home to you,” he chuckled.
A smile pulled onto my lips. Ahkeem loved me so hard that everyone saw it. I always wanted what my brother had with Britain. Now, sharing it with Ahk was like a dream come true. “I remember seeing the fear that used to be in Britain’s eyes whenever you would leave the penthouse strapped. I used to be so confused about why she ever doubted you would come back to her. It took me being in her shoes to understand.”
“Yeah, it’s a lot for the women we love to carry. We’ll make up for that shit eventually.”
I scoffed. “I hope so. Ahk’s been keeping me on my toes. I should’ve married a fucking square or some shit. Like a nigga who’s into stocks.”
Priest laughed, knowing good and well I would have ran circles around a nigga working a white-collar job. “That ain’t your speed, kid. We both know that.”
I laughed, agreeing with him. I continued to put up all the pots and pans, and he remained in the kitchen keeping me company. I could tell he knew that I wouldn’t be able to actually relax until I heard from Ahk.
“Jazzy, can I ask you something?”
I looked up from the countertop I was wiping off and faced him. “Shoot.”
“You ever gonna tell Ahk about what happened?”
Instantly, my heart clenched and fear struck me. As I leaned against the island, Priest and I locked eyes. It went without saying what he was referring to. Since it happened, we agreed to never bring it up again. Priest allowing the situation to resurface made me realize no matter how much I tried pushing it to the back of my mind, the shit still happened. What was done in the dark would always come to the light, and that scared the living shit out of me.
