“It wasn’t a date.” I lean over the countertop and reach a hand to the first drawer, opening it. I pull out a granola bar, forcing it down like I haven’t eaten in years.

“It sounded like one when you called earlier.” She looks up from her papers, lifting her eyebrows at me. “I take it your date didn’t go well then?”

I scoff. My ‘date’ did go well, I’d say. Grey talked more than he ever has before, though ninety-nine percent of his conversation was about ice hockey, and the other one percent was whenever his niece was talking to him.

However, I think Grey was on the edge of smiling a few times, even laughing if I dare say so. He was snorting at my awful skating skills, but with Grey, a laughter like that is better than none. And when he dropped me off, he said he had fun. Grey hadfun, that has to count as something, right?

“We went ice skating,” I say, still leaning over the counter like an old sack of potatoes.

My mother tsks. “Poor choice for a first date. Doesn’t he know that not everyone knows how to skate? Especially around Malibu.”

“Again, it wasn’t a date, Ma. If it weren’t for his niece, he would’ve never invited me.”

“But wasn’t he the guy from last summer?” Mom sets her pen down, now looking at me with confusion. “The guy you’ve been talking about so much.”

I cringe internally. “I donottalk about himthatmuch.” At least I refuse to acknowledge it.

“Sure do, honey. But you know, I am proud of you for trying to go about this the non-obsessive way.”

Non-obsessive… “Ma, if I am talking about Grey as much as you make it out, which I will keep on denying, this isnota non-obsessive way.”

She waves me off. “You know what I mean. You’re not…”

“The old me,” I finish for her.

Mom nods. “You’re showing interest in a healthy way.”

Let’s just hope it’ll stay that way.
