Chapter 26
Rae
The sun shined brightlythrough the spot in the curtains where Duke was watching the birds. I looked up without moving my head and realized I was still curled up next to Caleb in the exact same spot where I fell asleep. I felt kind of embarrassed I had fallen asleep curled up next to him like this, but I couldn’t move my body and still felt sleepy. His heartbeat was such a calming sound. The comfort of that and the heat of his body made me start to fall asleep again.
I did not realize waking up next to someone could be this amazing.
“Good morning, beautiful,” Caleb said with a sexy, gravelly voice. It snapped me out of a daydream state between being asleep and awake. I was suddenly aware of being wrapped in the heat of his body, and to make matters worse, I realized my leg was over his.
I sat up in a panic. “Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry. I must have fallen asleep while I was hugging you.”
“No apologies necessary, Sunshine.” He placed a hand on my back, and I could feel the warmth of it soaking through my shirt. “How did you sleep?”
“Really well, actually. If I had a dream, I don't remember it. Thank you for being there for me.”
He rubbed my back a little and smiled at me. The instant heat I felt through my entire body was new to me. Why was I feeling like this? Caleb couldn’t feel that way about me, could he?He knows my story, that I’m broken because of it.
“Are you hungry?” His gravelly voice pulled me from my darkening thoughts like it had since I returned home.
“Starving.”
“Stay right here.” He took Duke and left the room and I settled back into the warmth of his bed, thoughts swirling in my head.
