“We’ll keep trying,” he sighs, stretching out beside me, pulling me into his powerful embrace. “As long as it takes. Even if I don’t knot, it doesn’t mean I can’t breed you. And that’s the best part, isn’t it?”

“I suppose it is,” I laugh, snuggling close to his hairy chest, the scent of him making me feel comfortable and safe. “Does that mean you’re done with me after I get pregnant?”

“No,” he chuckles. “I don’t know how you’ll react, but when a she-wolf is with child, she’s insatiable. Three months of absolute bliss before the pup is born.”

“Threemonths!?” My eyes widen.

“Wolves develop fast, even before they have fur. Three months from conception to birth. I guess you could say our kind can’t wait to see the world,” he jokes.

“Are wolf babies… big? I mean, you’re huge,” I ask, concern creeping into my voice.

“My firstborn will be my heir, if it’s a boy. A true Alpha, meant to lead this pack when my time is over,” he explains, then a grin tilts the edge of his lips. “But don’t worry, we’re much smaller when we’re born.”

“I sure hope so!” I remark. “But like… compared to human babies?”

“Not much different when we’re born,” he smiles. “You have nothing to fear. When the time comes, your body will adjust. You’re my mate. We wouldn’t be drawn to each other like this if you weren’t meant to carry my offspring. I would die before I would let anything happen to you.”

His confidence eases some of my concerns, but it’s still scary. A few days ago, the only thing I cared about was staying on Ms. Frost’s good side. Now, I’m thinking about my mate, my future, and… babies that will eventually be able to turn into wolves like their father.

But for now, I just need to rest.

I sleep through the night in Hayden’s arms. I feel him pulling away around sunrise and hear the shower running, but I don’t get up until I smell coffee. I take a shower before I finally make it to the kitchen.

“Another day of hunting vampires?” I ask, slumping down at the table.

“That’s the plan,” he answers me with a smile. “Meeting my brothers right after I eat.”

“Think it will be another late night?” I take a sip of my coffee.

“Most likely,” he replies.

We don’t have long to talk, and Hayden finishes his meal before I finish mine. I walk him to the door and we share a kiss before he pulls away. Kissing him when he’s in his Third Form is different. It doesn’t quite feel right, but I still know it’s him underneath the disguise.

After Hayden leaves, I finish my breakfast. I sit at the table for a long time after he’s gone, staring at my phone. I’m not sure whatto do about my job. I can’t stay hidden away in this safehouse forever. If I call in again, I’m sure to be in the Ice Queen’s crosshairs.

“Technically, Hayden didn’t tell me I had to stay here all day like he did yesterday. It was implied based on what he said yesterday, but…” I mutter, glancing over at the cars in the garage. “If he’s late, like he was yesterday, he may not even realize I left.”

I don’t want to give Hayden a reason to distrust me, but I’m scared of losing my job. I’ve worked so hard to get here. Plus, I’m not completely defenseless. I can tell when someone is watching me. I had a vision that told me where Daisy was.

“I’ll be careful. Straight to work and straight back to the safehouse,” I mutter, the idea rooting itself in my mind. “If he finds out, I can handle another spanking. I won’t like it, but it’s a small price to pay to keep my job.”

I make my decision and hurry to the rack that holds the keys for the cars in the garage. I don’t need anything fancy, so I find the keys to one of the newer sedans.

A few minutes later, I’m on the way to my apartment, desperately in need of a change of clothes before I show up at York Financial.

It won’t be straight to work and straight back to the safehouse, but I’ll still be careful.

CHAPTER 19

Remy

I stare at the gashes on my arm, then wrap a bandage around the damaged flesh.

I let a fucking vampire land a shot on me. I rarely get hit. I’m too quick to get hit. Then again, I usually don’t leap over my brothers to be the first one to attack. Hayden and Jaxton are better suited for that.

“Fucking hell,” I mutter, leaning down to look at the map on my laptop.

Deep down, I know why I was careless. It’s because I can’t get Ansley out of my head. Can’t forget her scent. My brother’s mate shouldn’t be tangled up in my thoughts like this. She’s not mine and she’ll never be mine. She’s already been claimed.
