Once again: what a moron. It was inevitable really that she would judge it all wrong, since she had no real context for normal human interactions.
She took a deep breath and went over to where Rowan was standing still, waiting on his mark. His hands were on his hips, chest working in a way that showed just how distractingly broad his shoulders were. She swallowed.
‘Ready for the continuity photos?’ she asked quietly.
He gave a little nod, and she lifted the camera to take a photo, but before she could get her finger on the button, he’d reached out and covered it, with a swiftness that made her jump.
‘Flashing,’ he called out loudly, his deep voice carrying easily. Then he let go and nodded to her. ‘Now you can take it. You always have to call that out on set when you’re taking a photo, otherwise the electricians start freaking out, thinking something’s broken.’
‘Oh.’ She swallowed and nodded. People had glanced in their direction curiously. Probably wondering why he’d had to call it out when it washerjob. She pressed the button, congratulating herself on making another stellar first impression with a bunch of people.
‘It’s not your fault.’ He raised a hand as though to run it back through his sweaty hair, but restrained himself. The fresh tang of salt mingled with that citrus smell she remembered from the storeroom and it was not unpleasant to her in the least. ‘Someone should’ve told you.’
‘Well, you did. So, thanks.’ She looked away, focusing all her attention on the camera. The fact he’d rescued her from a faux pas on set wasn’t helping her to marry up the two different impressions she had of him. The first being, the surprisingly down-to-earth man she’d been trapped with. The second, a lofty star with a life so full of people, he couldn’t be expected to remember a lowly MUA like her.
She moved around him, ready to take a photo from another angle. Her heart thumped. ‘Err, do I need to say it every time? Or does the first time cover it all?’
‘If you don’t take too long between the photos,’ he said without looking at her. Obviously keeping still for the photos.
Right. Get the hell on with it, Lila.
She finished taking the photos and thanked him quickly before hurrying away as fast as she could without risking tripping on a cable and falling flat on her face.
Save that for another day maybe.
