“Don’t say that.” He gripped my biceps. “Don’t you fucking say that. I won’t let that happen. This is going to work. Don’t ask me to exist in a world without you.”
“Don’t ask me to go back to that life. I won’t do it, Cain.”
He tilted his head back and looked up at the ceiling like he was asking the heavens to help him. “I would never ask that of you, Delilah.”
Deep down, I knew that. Maybe I was self-sabotaging. Too scared of my past, and terrified that the future I wanted wouldn’t be mine.
“Let’s not worry about this now,” I said. “The important thing right now is that we’re ready. And whatever tomorrow brings, nothing can take away the time we’ve had. You have no idea what it’s meant to me being here with you.”
His forehead pressed against mine. The tension and high-strung emotions between us were palpable.
“Fuck, Delilah. I know this is crazy. And I know there’s no guarantee that everything is going to be alright. But I won’t let anything happen to you. Not again. I couldn’t live with myself. I’ve had five years to plan this. And while I like to think that I’ve thought of every angle, something could go wrong. We trained for this though. He has no idea we’re coming. Show me that punch I taught you.”
I lifted my arm and gave a weak punch into his waiting hand.
He rolled his eyes and raised his hand again. “Hit me, Delilah.”
I did, again. This time harder.
“Come on. I know you can hit harder than that.”
I channeled all the rage, all the resentment, all the fear that wascoursing through my veins and let it rip. When my fist met his open palm, I felt the bones in both our hands vibrate.
“That’s my girl,” he said with a wide as fuck smile. “We’re going to give him hell tomorrow.” His words held so much conviction, that I believed him. Fuck all the insecurities and the doubts. Tomorrow, I would kill my husband or die trying.
CHAPTER 34
CAIN
I’d hardly slept.Everything I’d worked for was finally happening. I got the girl. I made my family pay for what they’d done to me. I’d used Ace’s connections to find dirt on the judge that he was leaking on the web to ruin his pristine reputation. And now, the final piece of the puzzle was within reach. Pastor John.
Delilah slept soundly beside me at least. Good, she needed her rest for today. It wasn’t every day that you kidnapped and killed your husband.
Ace had double checked that Pastor John would be released sometime between noon and two depending on how busy the hospital was. His mother was dropping him off at his house and had an appointment to get her hair done at three, so she shouldn’t be a problem. I packed extra ropes and tranquilizers just in case though. Ace had come through and set up Delilah’s new identity. She had a new social security number, new name, and passport. The works. She even had her own bank account that had the money she’d been saving plus an extra million that I put in from my own trust fund. I wanted her to be able to have a life all set up for her should things take a dramatic and unexpected turn.
The Crusaders that John was connected to had a long reach. Their influence spanned the country in all pockets of power. The Senate, fortune five-hundred companies, Hollywood. They were fucking everywhere, all linked together by a common twisted goal—the same one Kingston Prep was founded on. To mold the next generation to do their bidding. They had each other’s backs and since Pastor John was a member, I couldn’t be too sure what and how they would react to one of their own being threatened. Ace had been working on locating all the members and dismantling them as best he could, but it was a slow process. They were a secret society, not wanting to be found and they covered their tracks well.
Delilah and I ate our breakfast in anxious silence in the early morning hours. Both of us lost in our own thoughts.
Mine were centered on this angelic creature before me and how fierce she’d become. I always knew she’d had a fire inside her. She’d needed it to survive as long as she had in this fucked-up world. Today, that fire was reaching an inferno. I could feel it sitting here across the kitchen table. The rage was wafting off her skin, and I smirked knowing that it was about to be put to good use. She’d become lethal with a knife, throwing it with far better accuracy than I was capable of. It was hot as hell and just picturing her ending her prick of a husband like that was enough to get me hard. She made planning for murder look good.
It was still dark outside when we left. Arriving when the neighbors were still asleep was paramount to the plan working. They were far too nosy for their own good.
“You all set?” I asked, pulling on my gear.
Delilah nodded, looking off into the distance. She was dressed in all black, same as me, with a bullet proof vest and an array of knives holstered to her thigh. Her fingers played with the handle on one of them like she was picturing what she was about to do with it. There was a hint of a smile that sat on her lips and my worry settled. She was… excited.
“I’m ready for this to be over,” she said. “I want to have him suffer and writhe in pain the way he’s made me suffer and writhe in pain. I want him so scared that he pisses himself. I don’t even feel an ounce of remorse for what I’m about to do.”
I nodded my understanding because I felt the same way.
“If anything goes wrong, we use our code word, okay? You remember what it is?” I asked.
She beamed at me. “Red light. As if I could forget.”
“Let’s go fuck some shit up, angel.”
“With pleasure,” she said as she grabbed the strap of my bullet proof vest and yanked me down to her. My lips met hers and our tongues tangled in a wild, passionate kiss. Fuck she was getting me so hard, but we didn’t have time to fuck right now. I pulled myself away breathing hard as I looked down into the crystal blue eyes that shone with desire and a promise of murder.
