Where is he going with this?
“Doomed to fail, you know what I mean?”
Um…
What the hell?
Did he really say that, or did I grossly mishear him?
Doomed to fail.
My stomach drops as I replay Drew’s words. All the confidence I felt two seconds ago melts away.
Who the hell does this guy think he is?
“No,” Owen shakes his head, clearing his throat as he pulls me closer. “I’m not sure I know what you mean.”
Drew laughs again, shaking his head.
“I’m kidding, I’m kidding,” he replies, though the alcohol in his voice makes it clear he’s not entirely joking. “Mostly.”
Instead of laughing along with him, Owen flexes his jaw and flares his nostrils.
“Good to know we’ve got your full support, man,” Owen responds, his tone full of disgust and sarcasm.
Drew grins sheepishly.
“Hey, I’m just speaking from experience,” he shrugs. “I dated a coworker once… Worst decision of my life, bro. Had to leave a damn good job once it all ended.”
Un. Fucking. Believable.
Whoever dated this guy dodged a freaking bullet, I can say that withone hundred percentcertainty.
Before Owen has a chance to respond, Drew downs the rest of his drink and yells toward a person he sees off in the distance.
“Brady! What the fuck, man? Didn’t know you were here!”
He lifts his empty glass toward us in a quick toast before wandering off toward another group.
And then, by the grace of God, he’s gone.
But his words still linger.
Doomed to fail.
Who says that? Who says that to any couple, no matter how they met?
I know I shouldn't let his alcohol laced words get to me… but they still sit in the back of my mind like a quiet warning.
I exhale a shaky breath as Owen’s thumb traces sensual circles against my hip.
“You okay?” he asks, his voice low and sweet.
I force out a small smile.
“Yeah,” I shake my head, doing my best to shrug it off. “I’m fine. He was drunk. It’s whatever.”
“Nah,” Owen retorts, “he's just a fucking asshole. Drew thinks we’re tight, but we’ve never been close like that. He can’tkeep a girl because he cheats on all of them. I’m sure that’s why his little office romance didn’t work out.”
