“What do you meanyou can’t find Phoebe?” I grip the back of my neck with my hand, trying not to crush my phone in my other hand.

“I’m not sure what happened,” Savage responds. “Sin thought he had her when he left the trailer park, but he later learned it was a different young woman who had climbed onto the back of his bike.”

“So, who was the woman on the back of Sin’s bike if it wasn’t Phoebe?” My patience is wearing thin. Thankfully, the cops arrived and took all the Sons of Decimation to jail, along with Piper’s mom, Patty. With the anonymous evidence we sent to the police station, Deadeye and his guys will rot in prison for the rest of their lives. As for Patty, I’m not sure what will happen to her.

“That’s the problem. They stopped at a gas station so she could use the bathroom, and then she ran from him. We don’t know her name or where she went. We didn’t even learn that Phoebe wasn’t at the trailer park until Prue told Ghost about the auction.”

“What about the auction?” I growl into the phone.

“Prue told Ghost that Phoebe took their car and went to the warehouse listed in an advertisement left by some guy at the diner to auction off her virginity.”

I never would have guessed that Piper and her sisters were that desperate to auction off something so meaningful to them.

Auction.

Lord.

It’s all beginning to sink in.

“Lord, have you tried to contact him? If the rumors are true, he’s in charge of them now.” I pace the living room, hoping I’m wrong and that Phoebe is safe somewhere away from the warehouse. Or that, at least, Lord still has some decency and isn’t actually auctioning off human beings at the warehouse.

“I’ll try, but I won’t guarantee he’ll answer when I call.” The pain is clear in Savage’s voice. I know he blames himself for losing contact with Lord all those months ago.

We say our goodbyes and hang up, with Savage promising to keep me informed of any new developments regarding Phoebe as Piper comes walking into the living room wearing one of my t-shirts, her skin a soft pink, fresh from her bubble bath.

“Are my sisters okay?” She touches my arm, causing me to stop pacing.

I don’t want to lie to her, but I’m not sure she can handle the truth about Phoebe right now. “Prue is safe. She’s staying with Ghost at his place for a while.” I don’t add that he’s basically claimed her and is refusing to let her out of his sight.

“What about Phoebe? You said she was with one of your club brothers.”

Before I can answer, my phone vibrates with a message. I glance at the screen and see it’s from Savage.

Savage:I just talked to Lord. He has Phoebe. He said she’s safe. But he’s not ready to give her back.

Me:What the hell does that mean?

Savage:I’m not sure, but he sounds like the old Lord. I think we can trust him.

Me:You’d better hope so, or he’s a dead man.

Savage:Understood.

I set my phone face down on the coffee table, sit on the couch, and pull Piper onto my lap. “Phoebe is fine too. She’s with Lord.” I don’t elaborate and let her draw her own conclusion.

“Thank goodness.” She sighs, sinking deeper into my arms. “Now, tell me everything that happened tonight and why you were hanging out with scum like the Sons of Decimation.”

I tell her the story, making sure not to leave out a single detail—my girl is too smart for that. Every so often, she lets out a little gasp of surprise and looks up at me with her big blue eyes brimming with tears. I rub her back, assuring her that the worst is over—or so I hope. Lord was a good man before he went deep undercover—I know the rumors can’t be true.

“And that is why my club brothers and I had to stop them.” I end my story by telling her about all the evidence we anonymously sent to the police station.

“You and the rest of the Steel Souls are heroes. Don’t you want to take credit for stopping them?”

“We’re not always the good guys, Piper,” I say, needing her to understand the world we live in.
