Like I knew they would, they came out of their cars with their guns pulled. I wasn’t going to trip for now because they didn’t know what the fuck happened. As long as they didn’t take it too far. I pointed out the cameras and told them that they were rolling.

My head snapped to the sound of Pril’s studio door opening. She ran out. “No! No! It was him.” She looked over to where Derrick lay on the ground, being one with nature. Her eyes shot up to me, then she ran my way. “Tafari!”

One of the cops tried to stop her. Now it was time to act a donkey. “Aye, you see she pregnant. Don’t fuckin’ touch ha. I told y’all ta look at da cameras.”

Officer Point stepped forward and told the other officers that were there to chill. He was one of my daddy’s poker buddies. He’d seen me grow up. “Son, you know we gonna have ta detain everyone until we know what’s going on.”

“I’on got a problem wit’ dat, Point. Just don’t touch my fiancée. We keep those terms den we good,” I told him.

Officer Point nodded. “We got you, son. I’m gonna ask Pril what happened, then look at the cameras.”

For the next couple of hours, the investigation went on. Nicole and Lacie arrived about twenty minutes after the cops arrived. Once the security feed was reviewed, we were all released from detainment. It was fucked up that a dummy had to lose his life. When it was between a dummy and me, it would always be me.

2 WeeksLater

Life Goes On For The Better . . .

These two weeks had been trying to say the least. The night everything popped off, I knew that Derrick’s death would affect Pril. She was with the nigga for years. I knew that there would be small remnants of love that she would need to mourn. That was fine.

For a split second, I worried about whether she resented me because I was the one that made him a social security payment for his chaps. From our conversations, she said that she didn’t. I didn’t feel like she did either. It was unfortunate that it had to go down the way that it did. The emotional toll that it took on my baby made me want to dig his ass up and choke his ass.

Derrick’s wife talked a lot of shit after her husband died. All of the talk was about my woman being jealous of her, so that was why she had me kill him. She wanted me to be charged with murder and all this bullshit. Pril felt for her and told me to just let her blow off her steam. The shooting had already been considered an act of self-defense.

My woman was way more graceful than I was. She had a best friend named Nicole that wasn’t as graceful either. After Nicole saw the surveillance tape, her ass downloaded it and sent it to Chasity with a little note that asked her what the general public would say. That shit shut her up. The day after Derrick’s funeral, Chasity moved. From what I heard, she had family in Florida. That was probably the best place for her to get the support that she needed.

“Pril Blinds.” The nurse’s voice knocked me out of my thoughts.

I stood then turned to help my baby out of her seat. She was so beautiful. “You ready to check on our baby girl?”

She reached her hands up to mine and allowed me to pull her up. Once she was up, I wrapped my arms around her, then kissed her lips. My lips moved to her ear. “You’re lucky we in dis office wit’ all des people. I’d find a bathroom and dick you down in da most disrespectful way.”

Pril smirked. “Oh, don’t threaten me with a good time. There are bathrooms in the back, and do you see this belly? I might need some help.”

Fuck yeah!I took her hand, and we walked to the back. The nurse sat us in the room assigned to us. It was another ultrasound day. I prayed we didn’t get any bad news today.

Amber came in first to do the ultrasound. Once she was done, it didn’t take much longer for Dr. Frog to come in. “Pril and Tafari, how are y’all doing today?”

“We’re good, Dr. Frog. How is our baby girl?” Pril asked the doctor.

She smiled. “Well, Pril, I have some good news. It looks like your placenta has moved up a little bit. It still sits lower than I would like, but it is in a much better position than it was before.”

My hand rubbed Pril’s back. “That’s good right, Doc? What does that mean?” I asked her.

“Does it mean that there’s a bigger chance that I can have a natural birth? Please tell me that’s what it means!” Desperation laced Pril’s words.

Dr. Frog gave us a warm smile. “Yes, it does. Now, a C-section is still a big possibility. I don’t want you to think that it is not. Your baby girl is still underweight at three point four pounds.”

Pril’s shoulders fell a little bit. I kissed her cheek. “Don’t worry, baby. Our lil girl is gonna be perfect. Hell, if she’s born underweight by the time my mama feed her some bust grits andeggs she’ll fatten up.” I pointed at Dr. Frog. “You didn’t hear that.”

She laughed. “I’ll act like I didn’t hear it for now. It will be a different story when your baby girl gets here. We are going to continue to keep an eye on your little girl bean. I need you to take it slow, easy, and stress free. I know these last two weeks have been a lot, but I need you to find the best way to be stress free. We want to avoid preterm labor.”

“Yes, we want to avoid dat at all costs. Right, Pril?” My eyes were tight as I looked at her.

Our wedding was all planned. Heaven did an amazing job of making it stress free for us. All we had to do was make minor decisions. After we gave Heaven the vision, she ran with it and did the damn thing. I loved that for us.

Pril sucked her teeth before she rolled her eyes. “Yes, I will remain stress free. I just hope that everything works out and I can have the natural birth that I wanted.”

Her doctor smiled. “I hope the same thing for you.”
