Chapter Twenty-Six
Felicity moved the driftwood lamp and looked behind it. She, Lisa and Fred had been searching Nathan’s flat for over an hour.
Lisa looked at her. ‘I told you, it was in the dish on the kitchen side. It would hardly have got up and walked into the living room.’
‘No. I agree, but you can’t accuse anyone of taking it before you have searched everywhere. What if Nathanmoved it?’
Lisa had called Felicity as soon as Nathan had left for work, telling her about her missing bracelet and confiding her suspicions.
‘I asked him if he’d seen it when he came to bed last night.’
‘And?’ Felicity moved the cushions on the sofa for the second time, while Fred crawled around the floor, searching for the missing “treasure”.
Lisa sighed. ‘He kissed me, madea joke about my baby brain and said it couldn’t be far. Then he fell asleep.’
‘Typical! OK, so Nathan didn’t move it. What about Uno?’
‘Uno? Flick he’s a cat, not a bloody magpie.’
Fred giggled.
‘I know that. But the bracelet has dangly things on it, cats like dangly things.’
Lisa pointed to Uno, snoozing on the cat bridge. ‘He spent most of the evening up there. I’m prettysure I would have noticed if he’d started running around with my bracelet.’
‘OK.’ Felicity looked at Lisa’s sullen face. ‘I know you’re upset. And if what you’ve told me about the engagement ring is true – and I don’t know why you failed to mention that until today – then Sam possibly has form, but Lisa,’ Felicity put her arm around Lisa’s shoulder, ‘we have to be sure. Imagine Brett findingout about Sam’s feelings for Nathan now.’
A side table falling to the ground as Fred attempted to crawl under it caused them both to look in his direction.
‘Oh poo bags!’ Fred stood up, his face looking innocent.
‘Fred! Don’t say that,’ Felicity admonished.
‘Fred, you’re a genius!’ Lisa began searching her pockets for her phone.
Fred looked between his mum and Lisa, clearlypreferring Lisa’s assessment of the situation he gave her a smile.
Felicity looked at Lisa dumbfounded.
‘The Pet Cam!’
The Pet Cam lay on the floor amongst the letters and books Nathan had left on the table.
Felicity crouched to pick the items up, while Lisa hurried to get her phone having remembered it was on charge in the kitchen.
Felicity called after her, ‘Setting it upnow won’t do you any good. Didn’t you say they’re leaving tonight?’ Felicity stood up and looked as if she’d just had an idea. ‘Unless we bait Sam.’ She gasped. ‘I think Alice has a fingerprinting kit.’
Lisa returned to the room. ‘Flick, we’re not Cagney and Lacey! We’re not going to bait anyone, and we won’t need a fingerprinting kit. Hopefully, we’ll have all the evidence we need right here.’
‘But I thought you couldn’t set it up?’
‘I couldn’t, but then I watched a YouTube tutorial and got it sorted – did you know they have tutorials for everything on YouTube? Literally everything.’
‘Really? I hardly use it. The children do though.’ Felicity grimaced, before shaking her head and returning to the point. ‘So you got the Pet Cam set-up—’
‘And there wasn’t really anythingto report. Though it did confirm Uno loves the cat bridge; he sleeps a lot!’
‘So how will the Pet Cam help us now? Do you think it might have been Uno after all?’
