I snuck to the office door, my hand turning the handle. The door was opening softly when I heard a door open and steps coming down the stairs slowly. I froze, straining my ears to see if it was Gabriel coming down.
I heard a footstep come off the stairs onto the hardwood floors and stop. A beat passed, no longer than a heartbeat, before he spoke.
“Fai?” Gabriel called quizzically.
Fuck, a pillow and blanket were still lying on the couch, a telltale sign someone had been there. I closed the door silently, turning the handle slowly, praying he wouldn’t hear the latch catch.
“Hey, Sarah,” Gabriel called, just as the door was fully shut and I stepped away carefully, looking around for somewhere to hide. “Have you seen Fai? Did he sleep on the couch?”
“I was tossing and turning all night; he left to get some real sleep,” she lied easily, covering up for our fight. I couldn’t see her, but I could hear her voice coming down the hallway from our room. “He did leave a note on the table saying he was goingto town. I saw it when I grabbed breakfast. Is his truck still gone?”
My gaze whipped toward the front window where my truck very much sat, giving away the fact that I was here.
“I’ll check,” Gabriel called, his steps sounding closer and closer with each second.
“I’m gonna hop in the shower,” Sarah called, the bathroom door closing in the distance.
The office doors were glass, and the only way to see the front porch would expose me. Shit… I looked around again, trying to find somewhere—anywhere—to hide before Gabriel found me.
