“Oh, interesting.”

“What?” Helena asked after taking a drink herself.

“It just says, ‘Wedding. Big or small?’”

Becky turned the card to Helena.

“I haven’t proposed yet.”

Becky smiled at her, set the card down, and said, “You are right: not something we need to talk about now.”

“No, that’s not what I meant.” Helena sat up and faced her. “You heard that I saidyet, right?”

“Yes, but it’s been two days, so…”

“No, it’s been months.”

“Helena, we–”

“Rebecca, it’s been months. I’ve wanted this for months. You’ve wanted it for months. I’m not saying we change our anniversary date or anything, but we’ve been getting to know one another since we met. That was a while ago now. I know your coffee order because I watched you make it. I know you like Long Island Iced Teas, for some reason.”

Becky laughed a little and said, “They’re good.”

“Sure, they are,” she teased. “I know you drink merlot when you’re in the mood for wine and that you like pizza with pineapple on it, even though I think pineapple has no business on a pizza.”

“If you have it with ham, it’s sweet and salty.”

“So are you,” Helena joked and wiggled her eyebrows.

“Oh, no. You’re better than that.” Becky laughed.

“I know you love your family more than life and that you’re close to all of them. I even know that you go over there every Sunday, whenever you can, for dinner. You don’t go to church with them, though, and that took some time for your mother to get used to. I know all your coming-out stories. I know your major in college and how you started your business.” Helena smiled. “I know that you love to read and don’t watch much TV, but when you do, it’s guilty pleasure stuff like some reality show. I don’t know everything about you, of course, and I never will, but we’re not exactly starting from scratch here. So, I’m not scared to talk about the possibilities of what we could have one day. I want this to work. And if it does, and we get there, we should know what the other person wants, right? We’re already doing that with sex. Why not the other stuff, too?”

“Small.”

“What?”

“I want a small wedding,” Becky revealed. “Just close friends and family.”

“Okay. What else?”

“I don’t think I want to wear white. I’m not exactly a virgin.”

Helena looked her up and down and said, “No, you arenot.”

Becky laughed and said, “I don’t know what else. Um… Maybe outside, somewhere with a beautiful view and a good party after.”

“Sunset?”

“What?”

“Ceremony at sunset.”

“Oh, that could be nice,” Becky said with a wistful look on her face. “And then, the reception right after. Oh, and no awkwardly posed pictures that we look at later and wonder what sticks we had up our asses. I’d want a great photographer, and I’m willing to pay, you know?”

“You could never take a picture where you look like you have a stick up your ass,” Helena noted.

“You’d be surprised,” Becky replied with a little laugh. “Okay. What about you?”
