Lawrence thought for a moment. “Sure.”
They continued down a nearly identical hallway. Finally, Lawrence pulled up and swiped his key card. Nothing happened. “Shit!”
“What’s wrong?”
“Different key card,” he said in frustration. “I forgot, they keep us away from the food. Hold on,” he muttered.
Kait scanned the hallway. Our luck has to run out soon.
Lawrence pulled out another key card. “All the guys in medical like snacks though.” He grinned and swiped the card. The door opened and they rushed inside. It was a room triple the size of Kait’s cubicle, shelves filled with boxes of dry goods.
Kait closed her eyes in relief. “Okay.”
“All right.” Lawrence looked at her. “I’m gonna find the uh, decontam team. They’ll be able to get you out of here and off of this ship.”
“You’re leaving me?” she squeaked.
“I have to, Kait. We’ve got to get you out of here. I won’t fail you like I failed Noomi.” He paused. “If we survive this, we can stay friends, okay? I don’t think I’ll have a job here anymore.”
Kait stepped forward and kissed him on the cheek. “Lawrence, we will definitely stay friends.”
He blushed furiously and put his hand to his cheek. “Uh, gosh,” he said and slipped out the door.
If I wasn’t in love with Aurelian, I swear I’d marry that kid—
Wait, what?
In love, you dummy, came the answer.Haven’t you figured out you love Aurelian?
She put her hand to her mouth in shock as she moved to hide behind a shelf.
You’d better haul ass and find me, Aurelian.
I love you.
The door to the pantry whooshed open.
