“Coffee?” he asked.

“Nah.” The thought of coffee made my stomach roil. “How about a water?”

“Sure.” He spun around to the refrigerator and handed me a cold water. I place the bottle to my face because it felt so good against my heated skin. The morning sunlight shining through the large kitchen window, my tequila hangover, and a shirtless Fox were all contributing to my spike in temperature.

“Devin, it’s a bit stuffy in here, ever hear of air conditioning?” I fanned myself with my hand and gulped down my water.

“The air is on, drunk girl.” Fox laughed and walked to adjust the thermostat. “You won’t give up on this name thing, will you?” he called over his shoulder.

“Nope.”

“Okay, fine. Keep on guessin’ then.” He shrugged and walked into the bathroom.

I looked around, the place seemed different in the daylight. It was small, semi-neat, and homey. It also looked like a guy lived here since the furnishings were sparse. There was a large flat screen TV surrounded by a bunch of electronics, a dark brown comfy couch, a small work desk covered in papers, and a day’s worth of dishes in the sink. I had no idea what possessed me, but before I knew it, I was loading dishes into the dishwasher and wiping down the counters. When Fox emerged freshly showered and wearing only a towel as he walked into his bedroom, I averted my eyes and pretended to concentrate on cleaning a spot on the counter. Did he do that on purpose to get a reaction from me or was he just unaware of how hot he was? I was ready to put an end to the questions once and for all. I was never one for teasing. If I wanted it, I took it and I was thinking about taking Fox.

When he walked out of his bedroom still wearing his glasses and fully dressed in a white T-shirt and dark jeans, I hurried past him as I flashed my most innocent smile.

I dug around in my bag for the bikini I’d purchased in town the day before. It was on the sales rack outside of a surf shop, and since I was at the beach, I would need a bathing suit. The little white swimsuit with a blue diamond pattern wouldn’t have been my first choice, but it was in my size, under twenty dollars and I felt I could work it.

After changing, I brushed my hair and piled it on top of my head. Satisfied with myself, I strutted out into the living room. The look on Fox’s face was worth more than money. He was sitting on the couch with his laptop open, those sexy glasses still in place when his eyes lifted to me. His jaw dropped briefly before he picked it back up. I knew I was curvy and trim in just the right places, so I felt confident standing there as his eyes roamed over my body before he cleared his throat and spoke.

“There are...uh... towels in the closet behind you.”

“Thanks,” I replied as I turned, fully aware that he would get a good look at my backside. As I walked past him with a beach towel folded in my arms, I put a little more sway in my hips before reaching the door and stepping outside.

Oh, his reactions were too much fun.

The cool water felt good ag

ainst my skin as I swam. My head felt better, and my brain was a little clearer. It was time to think about my next move. Staying with Fox was an option, but not my favorite. He’d been nice to me, maybe even a little nicer than I’d deserved. Ok, much nicer. Even still, I didn’t want to take advantage or let things get weird. He was different from other guys I’d known. He’d never asked anything of me and he seemed to be helping me because he wanted to.

I wasn’t used to guys like him.

When my arms grew tired from swimming I went back up to the house. In the daylight, I was able to see that it was a small, rugged, but cozy house with white clapboard siding and a large weathered porch facing the ocean. It was more of a little hut than a house, but it seemed perfect for Fox. I sat on one of the lounge chairs on the deck and let the sun warm me for a while as I came up with a plan. After twenty minutes of serious contemplation of my circumstances, I came up with nothing. I couldn’t go back to Charleston and I didn’t have enough money to get me very far if I chose another place. Finding a job on the island seemed like the only feasible solution, at least that way I could save money. Maybe even finding a room for rent somewhere would be a good idea, because one thing was certain, I planned to have my way with Fox before it was over. I didn’t have the best track record with men, so things were bound to eventually end, and badly. Being kicked out of his place was inevitable, and I needed to be prepared.

With my plan all set, I went back inside using the same extra sway and found Fox out front looking under the hood of his car. I went to the refrigerator, grabbed a water bottle, and walked outside. His brows were furrowed in concentration as he twisted the cap onto something attached to the engine. I knew he was aware of my presence because his gaze shifted toward me quickly and then back down to what he was doing. I leaned in and rested my forearms against the side of the car, just under the hood. For extra effect, I let my behind stick out as I arched my back. I knew how it looked and I was hoping he would take the bait.

“So, Foxy. What do you have planned for today?”

When he didn’t answer I looked up at him, he was standing with his arms crossed and staring with his jaw tight.

“What’s the matter?” I asked as I slowly wiggled my lower half teasingly.

Without warning, Fox closed the distance between us by resting his front against my back and said in a low voice, “I know what you are trying to do. You have in your head that I’m some kind of poor henpecked bastard that you can play your little games with. I’ll let you in on a little secret.” I felt him run his hand over the round globe of my ass. “This is hot.” He pressed his fingers from his other hand to my lips. “But most of what comes out of this completely cancels it.” I started to sputter a reply, but he continued. “The tough girl with a smart mouth act doesn’t do it for me but the girl underneath who hums in the shower, likes the feel of the rain on her face and cares about other people’s feelings, now she makes me hard.” He emphasized his last statement by pressing his erection against my ass once before backing away.

Oh. My. God.

Chapter Nine

I couldn’t move. My legs felt like jelly and my bikini bottoms were soaking wet… all over again. My eyes tracked his movements as he walked to his toolbox sitting on the ground and began tossing items inside, clearly pleased with himself.

“I’ve got a couple of things to do today. Do you want to ride along?” he called over his shoulder as he carried the tools into the house. When I finally gathered my wits and picked my jaw up off the ground, I cleared my throat.

“Um, sure. I was thinking about looking for a job in town,” I answered, following Fox inside. He was in the kitchen washing his hands.

“A job?” He didn’t hide the surprise in his voice. “What about Charleston. Don’t you live there?”

“Not anymore. I’m going to go and change.” I decided not to say more than that. The last thing I wanted to do was start unloading all my problems on him. He stared as if he wanted to ask questions but didn’t say anything more.
