“Okay, I’ll do that. Pop and I have been working on it ourselves, but it doesn’t hurt to have you take a look.”

We stayed and talked to Blake for a little while longer. Annette and Hal’s friends were doing a decent job of keeping things going and everyone was having a good time. I danced with Jonna and Tayia to some of their jukebox selections. I tried to convince Fox to slow dance with me, but he told me that he hated dancing in front of people and it reminded me of that night at the motel. It made me realize just how big of a deal it was that he did that dance off with me. But, as soon as I turned to dance with another guy, Fox was out of his seat and had me in his arms instantly.

The first few chords of the acoustic rendition of Everlong started to play, and it reminded me of speeding down the dark road with Fox last night as we listened to the rock version. Other couples started to pair off and sway to the music.

“Dance with me, Harley,” Fox whispered in my ear and pulled me into his arms so that our chests were touching. My feet automatically followed his lead. His arms were wrapped tightly around my waist and I folded my arms around his shoulders. Our embrace felt so natural and we moved together so perfectly to the music. I closed my eyes and let the lyrics carry me away.

??… If everything could ever feel this real forever... ??

He lowered his head and nuzzled the side of my neck and the contact of his warm breath on my skin caused tiny goose bumps to spread over every part of my body. One of his hands caressed up and down my spine while the other rested low on my hip. My fingers moved up to his nape and through the back of his hair as I exhaled.

“I love this song.”

“I know,” he replied softly against my neck. His lips moved up to my ear as I enjoyed being held in his arms. I pressed my hips closer and felt his growing erection. He reacted to the contact by taking a sharp breath, which caused me to bite down on my bottom lip. I loved that he was so honest about wanting me.

“Harley,” he breathed and pulled back to look at me. His eyes were filled with heat and something else I couldn’t identify. He lowered his mouth, briefly brushed his soft lips against mine before applying more delicious pressure. I tilted my head to the side and open my mouth allowing his tongue to enter and gently stroke mine over and over. A moan escaped from the back of my throat.

“Let’s go outside and get some air before I end up taking you right here,” he murmured against my lips and I could feel his heart thumping wildly against my chest.

After we stepped outside into the cool air we kicked off our shoes at the end of the patio and walked together hand and hand on the sand in comfortable silence. The heat that we created on the dance floor still hummed through my body and I let the air cool my cheeks.

“Your mom and Hal are cute,” I said as we walked along the beach.

“I know, they’re happy together,” he replied.

“So, you and Woody use Hal’s last name?”

“Yeah, he adopted us. There is no way in hell that I would allow people to call me by the name of a deadbeat who abandoned my mother with two small children. I’m proud to use his name.” I thought about how it was just Gram and me for so long and my heart ached at the depth of love and respect in the Fox household. I’d always wanted that. It was proof that biology alone didn’t make up a family.

We walked in silence for several minutes until Fox pulled us to a stop and turned to me. “Harley, I’m sorry for pushing the issue of staying at my place.”

“Drew, it’s okay I just—”

“No,” he interrupted. “Please let me finish saying this first.” His eyes held mine until I nodded.

“Everything between us has been so mixed up and out of order. I’ve tried to make sense of what is happening between us, but I realized that there is no explanation. It’s the unexpected things that knock us on our ass the hardest, you know? I guess I’m worried that you’ll decide to just run off at any moment and it’s driving me insane. Like the hurricane wind that brought you into my life might one day come back and carry you away and I’m just left here grasping at the air trying to keep you.” He lowered his eyes as he stared at the sand. And there it was, my reason to stay. He was my reason.

“I’m not going to run,” I said quietly, my heart feeling so full, and I knew as I said the words that I meant them. He’d managed to convince me in a short amount of time that he could give me everything that I longed for but was too afraid to let myself have. When Fox looked up, there was hope and apprehension on his face, but he didn’t speak, so I continued. “As long as you are here I’ll never want to leave.”

“Harley.” He breathed my name as he pulled me to him. I stared up at his gorgeous face and decided to take a risk. I was overjoyed and terrified all at the same time but if it meant having him, it was worth it.

“I love you, Drew. That is something I can’t remember ever telling another person besides Gram in my adult life.” I gave him that last part so that he knew the seriousness of my words and what it meant for me to say them. I pulled his face to mine and kissed him. His lips covered mine with so much tenderness that I could have cried from the sweetness of the gesture.

“I love you, Harley,” he said when he finally pulled back, his eyes glowing. “God, I think I started falling in love with you the moment I saw you standing on the side of the road staring up at the rain.”

“You found me. I needed you and you found me.”

“I needed you, too. Now, I have you.” He pushed a lock of hair away from my face as he brushed his lips against mine.

“Is it crazy to be in love after only knowing each other less than a month?” I asked with a giggle as I rested my forehead against his.

“No, and even if it was, I don’t care. Call me crazy because I am so in love with you.”

“Can I call you ‘Crazy in Love’?” I asked and then I started my Beyonce dance while Fox threw his head back and laughed.

“You are insane, girl.”
