“And usually when someone starts an introduction the other person generally responds in kind. What’s your name?” He chuckled, and I knew that he was enjoying giving me a hard time.

“My name is Harley. Like the motorcycle.” I had no idea why I needed to point that out, but I’d said it before I could stop myself. I used to introduce myself to people that way when I was younger. I wanted them to think that I was a cool girl with badass parents who named her after a motorcycle. I used to earn a lot of impressive looks and began building a reputation that eventually attracted the attention of every low life in Charleston.

“Nice to meet you, motorcycle girl.” He flashed me a grin that made my body shiver.

“Are you cold?” he asked with concern as he fiddled with knobs on the console until I could feel my behind start to warm under the seat.

“Thanks,” I said, and he nodded. I left out mentioning that the chill running down my spine had nothing to do with the weather.

“I appreciate the warning about Big Earl. He ended up ordering an omelet, by the way.”

Stunned, I looked over at him for a second then threw my head back and laughed. I had honestly forgotten all about the diner conversation.

“I was just having a little fun with you. The way those waitresses were going all goo-goo gah-gah, and how oblivious you were,” I mimicked the women’s faces in an exaggerated manner by opening my eyes wide, sticking out my tongue and panting like a cartoon dog. “It was too comical not to get in on it.”

“Oh, I wasn’t oblivious. Some things are hard to miss.” His eyes briefly shifted to me before turning his head back to the road. “So where were you headed?” he said, clearing his throat as he glanced back into the rearview mirror.

“I’m going to Sea Whisper Island,” I answered with all the confidence of someone who hadn’t just made the decision to go there fifteen minutes ago.

“Really? Who do you think the luckiest person in this car is right now? I’m on my way there, too.” He grinned as he used my own line against me.

“Well, I guess we were meant to be,” I replied saucily and gave him a wink. I swear his cheeks colored just a bit.

Oh, he was going to be lots of fun.

I rested my foot on the dashboard and the hem of my dress slid back away from my thigh. I didn’t miss the way his eyes darted to my legs before focusing back on the road. His Adam’s apple bobbed up and down as he swallowed uncomfortably, then licked his lips.

“So, uh, are you, um, goin’ out to the island to vacation?”

“Something like that,” I took out my lip gloss, flipped the visor down to apply it and fix my damp hair. I looked a little better than I did that morning, thankfully. It was the boost of confidence I needed to continue my flirty game with him.

“Why are you going out to the island, Fox?” I emphasized his name.

“I live there,” he replied.

“Hm,” I shrugged. “What are you doing so far from home?”

“I drove up to Columbia for a buddy’s wedding,” he smiled, looking a little nostalgic.

That was not an interesting answer at all. To his credit, he might be nice to look at, but he was boring me. Maybe I wanted him to allude to the fact that he’d been doing something… less normal. The last thing I wanted to do was talk about his “buddy’s wedding.” I didn’t care, and I was too tired to pretend that I did.

“Nice. Can I turn on the radio?” I asked, quickly changing the topic.

“Sure, go ahead.”

I messed with the knobs until I found a song that wasn’t country music.

“So, how long is the drive to the island?” I asked through a yawn.

“A couple hours.”

I shifted in the seat so that I could slide off my boots then swung my legs back up to the dash. The hem of my skirt fell down again, exposing plenty of thigh. I flexed and pointed my toes a few times then placed my bag under my head to use as a pillow. Since he liked to stare at my legs, he might as well get a good look.

“Will you be a prince and wake me when we get there?” I glanced over to see his eyes had gone a little wide, and his shoulders looked stiff as he gripped the steering wheel with both hands. “Am I making you uncomfortable sitting like this because I can…” My voice trailed off as I started to pull my legs back.

“No, no. It’s fine. I just didn’t expect…” His voice trailed off. “Do what you need to do.”

“Well, I’m full of surprises, Foxy.” I grinned coyly, settled against my bag and closed my eyes.
