Her legs fell open as he rolled off her, gasping. He stumbled to the attached bathroom to dispose of the condom, then pulled on his boxer briefs. He gave her a questioning look, and she nodded as he climbed back into bed with her.

Her body was putty. Her bones were jelly. Jake pushed some sweaty strands out of her face, looking down on her with a dazed look on his face.

“You’re incredible.” He brushed his lips across her forehead.

She scoffed. “Me?You’re amazing. That was… that was…damn.” There really were no words.

The last thing she saw was the most dazzling grin before he reached across her and turned off the light.

Jake returned to consciousness in the early hours of the morning to see Olivia in a sports bra and leggings, lacing up her running shoes. His cock twitched as he remembered where he was. Last night wasn’t a dream.

“Where are you going?” he croaked.

She turned, startled. “Hey, sleepy head. I’m going for my run, remember?”

“Wait for me, I’ll come with you.” He pulled himself from the bed, willing his morning wood to go down.

“You’re going to run with that? Won’t that be uncomfortable?” She glanced down.

“You wanna do something about it instead?” The thought made him grow harder.

Olivia licked her lips but looked away. “It’s not a good time.”

“Haven’t you ever had morning sex?” Man was she missing out.

“I just don’t want my parents to wake up. If we’re out running when they wake up, they won’t realize you spent the night in my bed.”

Parents. The ultimate boner killer.

He hurriedly pulled his t-shirt and his running shorts on before grabbing his socks and shoes. “Let’s go, then.”

She led him to the woods at the edge of the yard, past the garage and the driveway. A path was there, worn with time. He couldn’t help but be distracted by her tight little ass in those leggings as they stretched. But she refused to look at him. They were silent as they ran the trail, a bit of dew still sparkling in the early morning light. Birds woke in the trees and started singing. Despite the peaceful surroundings, Jake was uneasy. Something was wrong.

When Olivia hit what he assumed was her midpoint and turned to go back to the house, he held up his hands to stop her. “I wanna talk.”

She stopped short, blinking at him. “About what?”

“About last night.” He was dying to peel those leggings down and make her come again, to push her back against a tree and watch her writhe against him. She had been so vulnerable, so open in the throes of passion, but this morning she had emotionally shut down. He needed to get to the bottom of this while they were alone.

“What about last night?” She crossed her arms and licked her lips, sweat glistening on her skin.

“Did it mean …anythingto you?” Hesitating, he took a step forward and touched her arm. She didn’t pull away, which he took as a good sign. But her face was still wary.

“What do you want it to mean?” She stood still, watching him, her voice softening. He refused to look away from her eyes as he stepped even closer.

“I’d like it to mean I have a shot when we get home. That this doesn’t have to be fake.” He searched her eyes, desperate to know he wasn’t the only one that felt a connection last night. That it hadn’t beenjust sexto her.

He’d laid all his cards out on the table for her the day before. Everything he uncovered about her made him want her more; the way she’d bantered with her family during a rousing game of UNO, and the way she’d held her cousin’s children as they passed the babies around.

But maybe she hadn’t felt that connection last night? Having sex—no,making loveto her had been incredible. It felt like coming home.

He was in deep. But was he swimming alone?

She looked down at the ground and dug the ball of her foot into the dirt path, then his feisty moon princess lifted her head and looked back at him. “I’d like that a lot. I didn’t expect you to … want to continue this.”

He cocked his head to the side and studied her. Really studied her. Then he cupped the back of her head and leaned in.

“I hope someday you’ll trust me enough to tell me what happened with whoever hurt you.”
