for someone who makes us feel good. Queen is a high bar.”

Cara squeezes softly. “Yeah, it is. But it’s so worth having. Better than anything you can imagine.”

Janey’s lips twist. She pats Cara’s hand and steps away. “Goodnight, Maya,” she calls over her

shoulder, a forced cheeriness in her tone I haven’t heard before.

We watch her go. Head bowed all the way to the elevator. “Jonas is in love with Janey,” I

murmur. “I thought he had feelings for her the first time I saw them together, but…”

“Yeah,” Cara murmurs. “He does. But she has a boyfriend.”

“Not a very nice one, by the sound of it.” Though honestly, what do I know about the dynamics of

a healthy relationship? Close to nothing. My parent’s relationship was about as far from healthy as

one could get.

She shrugs and sits on my desk. “I don’t really know. She doesn’t talk about him much. She seems

happy, so who am I to judge? But I agree with Jonas. The man just pulls up to the curb for her, which

isn’t a big deal, I guess. But knowing these men and how they treat their women, that would never

fly.”

“It doesn’t seem like a big deal. I’ve lived my whole life mostly by myself. I open my own doors

the whole time.”

Cara chuckles. “I used to sound like you. Now I have someone who spoils me rotten, and I love it.

I never want to go back. You can bet I’m keeping that man so fucking happy. He’ll never want to leave

me.”

The way she says happy and the way she winks at me makes it clear exactly how she’s making

Declan happy.

And now I’m blushing.

Again.

Cara laughs and nudges me with her foot. “You’re pretty shy about that stuff, aren’t you? Bree

mentioned the little shopping trip she took you on.”

“Oh god,” I groan. “That was so embarrassing. She kept yelling at me from across the store,

waving…things…around.” By the time we left that shop, my head was tucked so far into my shoulders

that I looked like a human turtle.

Cara throws her head back, laughing. “That’s my girl. There’s no need to be shy about any of

that.”
