is, I don’t know it. So as usual, I wing it.

“No, I don’t think I do.” My words land like darts, popping his balloon of tension. “It hasn’t

really been that long, so maybe it’s a bit soon, but knowing you feel that way is…good.”

“Good,” he repeats. “Ok. So I said it. But there’s no panic. It’s not an official proposal.”

“Right. Good.”

“Besides,” he says with a grin, “the official proposal would be a lot bigger. With a symphony, or

fireworks. Maybe a flash mob.”

“My skin is itchy,” I mumble, imagining all those eyes on me, all that pomp and circumstance. It

sounds horrible.

Zach cackles at the look on my face and presses a quick kiss to my lips. “Hurry up, woman, we’ve

got a dog to adopt.”

I follow, dazed, as we board the elevator and he hits the button for the lobby. Zach’s vibrating

with energy, bouncing lightly as he watches the numbers drop.

“So…ah. Flash mobs aren’t really my thing.”

“No? Maybe a proposal on a Jumbotron? They could broadcast the whole thing, and send it into

millions of homes. Everyone could see.” He’s teasing me. I see it in the glint in his eye. But just the

idea…I reach up and scratch the back of my neck.

“Maybe a flash mob would be fun,” I squeak, staring at the numbers. Zach laughs hysterically, and

I shoot him a glare. “You suck, by the way.”

He pulls me into a hug. “When I do it, I promise you it’ll be perfect. Don’t worry.”

I drop my head to his chest and snort. “Sure. No problem.” Tipping my head back, I meet his eyes.

“It doesn’t need to be perfect, Zach. It just needs to be perfect for us. The rest of it doesn’t matter.

And there’s no rush. We’re basically living together already. There’s no panic.”

“Basically,” he mutters. “You haven’t spent the night in your apartment in weeks. Remind me

again why you aren’t moving all the way in?”

“Abby. I don’t want to completely ditch her.”

“Ditch her? You’d be moving a couple of floors up. It’s not ditching.”

“We’ll see,” I say, scrunching up my nose. Abby might seem tough, but she’s not. I don’t want to

just abandon her. But I’m sure there will come a day when leaving makes sense. “Besides, all my stuff

was just delivered. I’d like to unpack and settle in.”
