That seems to cheer him up. He switches on the classical station and hums along with some
concerto written hundreds of years ago. And I sit, staring into the darkness, wondering what’s to
become of us.
Fuck that.
I’m not spending this weekend all melancholy and shit. I’m going to enjoy my family, and later,
when everything breaks up, I’ll venture out for some very adult entertainment. A smile curls my lips
as I wonder what stunning thing I’ll hook tonight. Then lose the smile when a pouty mouth, glossy
black hair, and magnificent ass are all that come to mind.
Not doing that. Not going there. I’m putting her out of my mind.
But first, I shoot a text to the security on duty tonight and make damned sure that Maya’s safe.
There. Now she’s out of my head.
My resolve holds….until Maya shows up at family dinner.

MAYA
“G ive me all your money.”
Everything flies from my hands as I spin with a cross between a shriek and a bellow, and
brace for an attack.
I have a second to meet Bree’s stunned eyes before she drops to the floor, howling with laughter.
“Oh my god, Maya. Seriously? What is that?”
My heart rate slows as I take in the laughing woman rolling around on the carpet. My cheeks heat
as I drop my foot back to the floor and lower my arms. “Ah, nothing. You’re lucky I didn’t kick you.”
She snorts, choking a bit. “Listen Maya-san, that crane kick was hella cool in the movies, but you
are not theKarate Kid. I think I’m safe.”
Frustrated, I consider kicking at her anyway. She doesn’t look like she’d care. But I do. Who am
I? I don’t kick people. I don’t get angry. But I seem to be feeling all kinds of new things this week.
Kneeling, I gather all my scattered design boards. “What are you doing? Why are you accosting me at
my front door?” I ask her.
With a bright giggle, she sits up, her blonde hair a frizzy halo around her head. “I just came down
to grab some chips. We’re all upstairs. You should come up!”
Dropping my hands into my lap, I stare at her. “Come up where? With who?”
