“Baby, your phone has been going off back-to-back. It might be important,” Kyon stated in a groggy tone. When I lifted my head, it took me a moment to remember where I was and how I got there. The events from the previous night were etched into my brain even though I would have rather forgotten most of it.
Kyon held my phone out, and when I saw who was calling, I quickly lifted off his chest. He wouldn’t allow me to go far, so I sat up and straddled his waist.
“Hey, is everything okay?”
“Where are you?” China yelled into the phone with worry evident in her voice.
“I’ll tell you later. What’s going on?”
“Well, I got up to go to breakfast and couldn’t get ahold of you. When I went up to your room, Kalvin answered, and he was very confused when I asked where you were. For some reason, he was under the impression you spent the night with me. When I realized something must have happened, I tried to cover for you, but I don’t think he bought it.
“I went ahead and got breakfast, but when I came back to my room, my key no longer worked. I’m down here at the guest services desk, and they said the card on file for my room was removed from my account due to fraud. They are saying I can’t get back into my room until a new card is put on file. I was going to use my card and deal with the overdraft fees later, but they are saying I can’t even make those changes because my name isn’t on the reservation. All of my things are in the room, and they are basically telling me I’m locked out until the issue is resolved. I don’t know what to do.” China panicked.
The phone was on speakerphone, and Kyon began to speak.
“Aye, China, Lai is about to give you my room number. Come up here while we figure out what’s going on.”
“Okay. Thank you,” China replied solemnly. I could tell she was stressed, and I hated that my drama was affecting her. I sent her a message with Kyon’s deck and room number. The situation reeked of Kalvin’s petty ass, and it enraged me.
I was well aware that he had a vindictive side, but he had never used that side against me. The room fell silent as I tried to come up with a plan. I was sure Kalvin was somewhere waiting for me to reach out to him, and as much as it pained me to do it, I didn’t see another way out.
“What’s on your mind?” Kyon probed. He rubbed his hands up and down my arms in order to distract me.
“I thought this was going to be a calm and relaxing vacation, and it’s everything but that. I know that my fian—I mean, my exis behind this room situation, and I’m gonna have to face him eventually.”
“I’m not sure how I feel about you being around him. You still haven’t told me about what happened last night and how you ended up back in my bed.”
I gulped, dreading the conversation ahead of me. Since I had to fill China in as well, I decided to wait until she arrived. It took her ten minutes, and as soon as I opened the door, she immediately started talking shit.
“I see you two wasted no time getting that old thing back. You could at least have told me I needed to cover for you. If looks could kill, I would have been dead and gone from the way Kalvin glared at me when I asked where you were. I know you aren’t used to living on the naughty side, but you’re supposed to let a bitch know if you’re gonna sneak off with your ex.” China fussed as she paced the room floor.
“It wasn’t as simple as you are making it seem. Besides, you would have known exactly where I was if you hadn’t been in your own entanglements. Would you like to tell the class who you were doing the horizontal tangle with last night?” I called out.
I smirked as her eyes bulged, but like a true pro, she hurriedly fixed her face.
“I am grown, and I don’t have to answer to you or anybody else when it comes to my coochie. Secondly, you should have interrupted if there was an emergency. Obviously, something must’ve happened for you to be roaming the halls at the ass crack of dawn. Spill the beans, heffa.”
I attempted to move out of Kyon’s lap, but he held me in place with his arms wrapped around me. I turned enough so I could face China, took a deep breath, and gave them a recap of what happened.
The room fell silent once again, and I didn’t have to look at Kyon’s face to know he was pissed. His grip on me tightened, and I could feel him tense up.
“Laikyn, why the hell didn’t you knock on my door? I understand that I might have been busy, but you already know how I am when it comes to you. There is no dick more important than you, and I would rather you interrupt me than to know that you were out in the halls unprotected. He could’ve chased you down or something. Anything could’ve happened to you.” China fumed, clapping her hands together angrily.
“Everything happened so fast, I barely had a chance to even think straight. When I realized you were preoccupied, I just decided to go to the next best place. I figured that once we all woke up, I would fill you in and possibly move the rest of my stuff into your room. It never dawned on me that he would try some malicious shit like this. He’s trying to get my attention, and he knows that you’re the best way to do it.”
Kalvin wanted me to come groveling at his feet and beg him to fix the situation. It was an ego thing for him. He wanted to prove that I needed him and not the other way around.
“I’m so sorry you went through that last night, and I’m sorry that I wasn’t there for you the way I should’ve been.” China’s voice cracked.
“It’s okay. There’s no reason for you to apologize because you didn’t know. The most important thing is that we’re both safe, and I’m gonna fix this,” I assured her.
“What the fuck do you mean by you’re gonna fix this? How exactly do you plan to do it?” Kyon spoke for the first time since I told them what happened.
“Before you get upset, just hear me out.” I prefaced, knowing he was going to snap before I could even finish my idea.
“Don’t piss me off, Lai. If you’re about togive me some half-cocked plan, save it. I’m not okay with anything that couldpotentially put your life or safety in jeopardy. We’re on a boat in the middle of the water, and my resources are limited.”
“Originally, I thought he was bringing me here as a romantic getaway, but I later found out he brought me on this trip so I could do a favor for him. I believe he is using China’s room as leverage to get me to finish my end of the deal. Well, I wouldn’t necessarily call it a deal since I never agreed to it in the beginning, but you know what I mean.”
