I lift a hand. “Okay, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”

“I’m sorry,” Eloise says, hanging her head a little. “I’m just not used to this level of disorganization.”

“I’m sorry too,” Jane says, “but only because my dad told me I shouldn’t shout.”

There, that’s something, isn’t it?

“Girls,” I say, then correct myself, “girls and boy, never turn on each other. There will always be other people who are willing to turn on you. But if you’re a real team, you’ll have each other’s backs.”

Mikey gives me a thumbs up, either because he thinks I handled that well or because he’s grateful he didn’t have to.

I’m going to pretend it’s both.
